NSA chief lobbies lawmakers to kill amendment that would limit surveillance

The head of the National Security Agency made an urgent visit to Capitol Hill on Tuesday to try to dissuade lawmakers from voting for an amendment that would rein in their mass collection of phone records.

Gen. Keith Alexander met privately with Republicans, and later Democrats, to voice the agency's concerns about an amendment to a major defense bill that would halt the blanket collection of records, including telephone call records, for people not already subject to an investigation.

Part of the concern is that even entertaining the amendment on the floor could expose certain programs.

snip The amendment folds into other efforts to cut funding for NSA programs and generally rein in the agency's operations, in the wake of media leaks about its surveillance programs.

The Rules Committee voted late Monday to allow the NSA amendments to the $598.3 billion defense bill to be voted on after the House begins consideration of the sweeping measure on Tuesday.

Another amendment prohibits funds to the NSA to target a U.S. individual or acquire and store the content of that person's communications, including phone calls and emails.

Amash said his measure would allow the NSA to collect data and records, but only if the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court said in a statement that the collection of data pertains to an individual under investigation. Otherwise, the NSA would lose its funding.

‘Defund NSA’ amendment will get a vote

Amash’s amendment would defund the NSA if the agency collected data and records from individuals who were not under official investigation. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court would be required to provide a statement confirming that the data being collected by the NSA is from a person under investigation.

With this government, we are all under suspicion/investigation so they will get their blanquet authority anyway regardless of how finite they craft the law. “bring in the usual band of suspects” will be the new logo for the NSA building.

Those who want to repeal this bill should go to the well and explain the sudden outcry that is in favor of putting a stop to these invasions.

If not for Fast and Furious, IRS, Benghazi, etc., we would probably just live on. But with these agencies perceived to be using the data to control political opponents, America just doesn’t trust enough to just live on.

Instead, get the NSA to use its vast data to solve, explain, and get to the bottom of Fast and Furious, IRS, Benghazi etc.

I’d like to see that.

What they already have on every American is chilling. If anyone truly thinks that some bill or amendment is going to stop the NSA from doing what they’ve been doing for over a decade, then I’ve got a bridge to sell them.

Sort of like the SALT treaties where all they did was just hide the nukes in underground facilities. The US GOVT has a really bad track record when it comes to telling the truth or doing what it says it will do. I trust them about as much as a gypsy roofer or asphalt truck driver.

The problem is that NSA has the discretion to determine “who are the bad guys”.

Given Obama’s war on America and conservative citizens, internal surveillance can NOT be permitted.

Did he lead off with a Powerpoint presentation regarding sexting intercepts from Members of Congress?
