Last night, amidst protests regarding the not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman trial for the death of Trayvon Martin, two of Youth Radio's sidewalk-to-ceiling windows were smashed, along with the windows of a few other local businesses in the heart of downtown Oakland.
Youth Radio has a 20-year history of carving out a safe space--and a creative outlet--for young people like Trayvon. All day yesterday, Youth Radio journalists covered the verdict and its repercussions, producing stories for local and national outlets. And our educators were preparing for summer classes, which start today. Moving forward, young people will continue to engage, inform, and challenge us, through their journalism, their learning, and their teaching.
Youth Radio is part of a network of community entrepreneurs working to bring economic development to the region fueled by our students creativity.
We are so grateful for the continued support of our community and our media network. Many of you have asked how you can help. If you are able, please donate to help us repair the damage to the building and continue our work with summer classes and youth-driven news coverage. On behalf of our young people, we truly appreciate your suppor
