No sign 787 fire caused by batteries: U.K. agency

The U.K. Accidents Investigation Branch said there was extensive heat damage in the upper portion of the rear fuselage of the Ethiopian Airlines plane, which caught fire while parked at Heathrow Airport in London.

“However, it is clear that this heat damage is remote from the area in which the aircraft main and APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) batteries are located, and at this stage, there is no evidence of a direct causal relationship,” the agency said in a statement, adding that the initial investigation is likely to take several days.

Ethiopian Airlines hasn’t grounded its three other 787 Dreamliners, the carrier said in an emailed statement to The Wall Street Journal. The fire was “not related to flight safety,” the company said.

Boeing on Friday said its team was working in support of U.K. authorities and Ethiopian Airlines to determine the cause of the fire.

Certainly a good news/bad news situation.

Good news it that the batteries didn't cause this fire.

Bad news is they don't know what did.

I read elsewhere that 60 fires a year occur in parked airplanes. Some are caused by cigarettes. Hopefully they can get this figured out quickly.

The Fire on Flight 163(large file - 45MB) began in flight shortly after takeoff. The aircrew screwed the pooch royally. No evac was ordered and it took 23 minutes after engine shutdown for the doors of the aircraft to be opened, by ground personnel, leading investigators to opine that everyone onboard had already been overcome by smoke inhalation. The problem is that the Saudis conducted the investigation and they contend that the fire started in the C-3 cargo hold not in the cabin.
