Cigarette smoking at new low among youths, survey finds

Cigarette smoking hit the lowest point ever recorded among American eighth-graders and high school sophomores and seniors last year, a newly released report shows.

Last year, only 5% of high school sophomores said they had smoked cigarettes daily in the previous 30 days, compared with 18% of sophomores who were smoking daily at one point in the 1990s. The numbers have also plunged for eighth-graders and high school seniors, hitting their lowest point since the surveys began. ~snip

Independent of your views on adult smoking...It's great news that less children are becoming addicted.

I can see why. They’re all doing meth, “bath salts” and marijuana now.

Actually I think smoking has become the in vogue thing to hate these days. Kids aren’t as likely to think they’ll look cool if seen doing it.

I’m actually glad to see this.

Good.
Too bad the media switched from glamorizing smoking cigs to smoking pot. Anything to screw the minds of the youth.

At least the little darlings are not evil smokers.

Smoking in the boys room is just an old song now.

Unfortunately, the poor lads now stand a good chance of encountering some transgendered freak who’s been given the run of the place by equally disturbed ‘adults.’

I alkmost feel like I need to start up again after all these years without cigs, just so the ‘lawsuit settlements’ can get paid in full. ... Naw, not really. But when I quit I was still enjoying the habit very much.

Check the stats for the rest of the world, especially Russia, Eastern Europe, and Asia. They’re smoking like chimneys, youths and adults alike.

I tried it for thirty days in high-school. Every once in a while I’d light up. Tell you what, at the end of the month I was not impressed. As little as I was smoking, ending it brought taste back to food. Amazing.

I just couldn’t do it. Not for me...

There is something addictive about the hand mouth thing alone, putting the tactile cigarette in your mouth, handling it, playing with it..., I can see where folks would get hooked into that alone.

Only because it’s cost prohibitive now. I guess the States will have to defer those taxes to gasoline and alcohol.. Why rely on smokers for the revenue when they can hit drivers and alcoholics?

I’d rather see someone smoke and be an honest and stand-up person than just appear so but really be a corrupt valueless future democrat. A young person’s body can easily withstand and come back from some casual smoking; especially if they are athletic. I remember quite a few of the worst sobs might not have smoked and always kept a clean appearance.

Or they can become full blown addicts...Is there a way to predict what happens?

If you don't count prescription drug addiction as addiction.

.It's great news that less children are becoming addicted.

You are aware the same "brainiacs" that changed the definition of addiction to include tobacco are also the same ones that removed homosexuality from the list of mental disorders and deviant behavior?

So, judging from your insistence on the idiocy of addiction as opposed to habituation, you agree that homosexuals are normal human beings without a problem.

You’re right; I can’t believe how many young people I see sharing one cigarette (like a joint). If they have no jobs, how can they buy smokes?

Kids never lie in polls like this /s.

My personal anecdotal evidence is to the contrary.

Of course, government has driven up the cost of cigarettes to a point where only the rich kids or drug dealers can afford them.
