Ben Franklin wanted to change the alphabet to about 15 letters, with some letters standing for sounds......

Reread it. Ampisand was the actual letter/symbol. It was changed to ampersand as a means of simplifying the terms used.

He reminds me of Conrad Cornelius O'Donald O'Dell, in Dr. Seuss's On Beyond Zebra, who said, "most people stop with the "Z," but not me.

Just bring back the thorn (TH combination) that we lost when English printers bought European presses missing the symbol. You know the signs that say “Ye olde whatever?” The “Ye” was actually “[Thorn]e”, the Y was the closest symbol to what thorn looked like.
