Doctors develop $260 infertility treatment for poor world

Belgian doctors have developed a low-cost version of test-tube baby technology for use in developing countries, where sophisticated Western systems are unaffordable for most couples.

The researchers said on Monday their simplified process cost around 200 euros ($260) per cycle of treatment and delivered results that were not much different to those seen with conventional in-vitro fertilization (IVF) program.

The price is just 10 to 15 percent of the current cost of Western-style IVF and suggests infertility care could one day become universally accessible, Elke Klerkx from the Genk Institute for Fertility Technology told a medical meeting.

Around 5 million babies have been born around the world since the birth of the first test-tube baby in 1978 - but the treatment remains largely the preserve of developed countries because of its high cost.

"Infertility care is probably the most neglected healthcare problem of developing countries, affecting more than 2 million couples according to the WHO (World Health Organization)," Klerkx said.

“developing countries.”

“developing countries.”

NOT developing is what they mean, right?

It sounds like this has the same ethical problem as other IVF. The deliberate destruction of many developing human embryos.

The implication here seems to be, and completely unfathomable to me, that this technology will only be available to poor countries. What about couples in the developed world who don’t have $30k lying around for current treatments? Are they not good enough for the $260 option?

Just what the world needs - a greater population of poor and illiterate citizens.

Fertility awareness is free. Healthy lifestyles that avoid STDs are free, too.

So the babies and children are going to be conceived so they can die in poverty conditions rife with disease, hunger and starvation. Or maybe they will be bred to be sold into human trafficking.

F-ing beautiful.

Agreed. This may increase the availability of fertility services to the developing world, but it would certainly be profitable in the West, too.

I only saw the trailer for “Z”, but the big rolley thing that come along with zillions of people is what we could expect.

You’re the one looking to give out fertility subsidies.

Actually, a lot of developing countries --- actually are. Until recent years --- believe it or not --- all these countries were listed as "developing":

Now they're (newly) listed as "developed," with another batch of "graduates" coming in right behind them: countries with great potential wealth like Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa, Thailand and Turkey.

On the other hand, for the worst AIDS-affected countries in sub-Saharan Africa, "developing" is a misnomer, a euphemism. They are falling back into utter wretchedness.

It's fraud to call this an "infertility treatment", since it does not treat infertility.

Infertility means inability to conceive or beget offspring via normal intercourse after a certain period of time (most say a year.)

After IVF "treatment" the infertility remains unaddressed: the couple is STILL unable to produce offfspring via normal intercourse.

IVF doesn't treat infertility. It substitutes a laboratory technique for intercourse. It's like saying I "treated" my lack of literary ability by hiring a ghostwriter.

As for the other question, the financial readiness of these people to have children: wouldn't that be within their competence to judge, not yours?

I read this last week. It's about mostly miserable lives in rotten places.

If I am taxed to pay for it. I should have a say. Since they lack judgment. But the gummit takes my money anyway.
