Archdiocese documents show priests paid to leave

MILWAUKEE (AP) — As more victims of clergy sex abuse came forward, then-Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan oversaw a plan to pay some abusers to leave the priesthood after writing to Vatican officials with increasing frustration and concern, warning them about the potential for scandal if they did not defrock problem priests, according to documents released Monday.

Dolan’s correspondence with Vatican officials and priests accused of sexual abuse was included in about 6,000 pages of documents the Archdiocese of Milwaukee released Monday as part of a deal reached in federal bankruptcy court with clergy sex abuse victims suing it for fraud. Victims say the archdiocese transferred problem priests to new churches without warning parishioners and covered up priests’ crimes for decades.

The documents have drawn attention in part because of the involvement of Dolan, who is now a cardinal and New York archbishop and the nation’s most prominent Roman Catholic official by virtue of his position as president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The records provide new details on payments made to some abusers to leave the priesthood and the transfer of nearly $57 million for cemetery care into a trust as the archdiocese prepared to file for bankruptcy.

Victims and their attorneys accused Dolan of bankruptcy fraud, pointing to a June 2007 letter in which he told a Vatican office that moving the money into a trust would provide ‘‘an improved protection of these funds from any legal claim and liability.’’

Church law requires bishops to seek Vatican approval for any property sale or asset transfer in the millions of dollars. Dolan wrote in the letter that the transfer had been approved by archdiocese’s Financial Council and College of Consultors.

A Vatican office approved the transfer within a month.

Here’s an even shorter answer. You are misinformed or fantasizing fromyour dark predjudices if you think that Dolan received active referrals about priest abuse and didn’t act on them. Lying slander is evil too.

You do realize that the accusations of Dolan come from quotes of Dolan. He has not denied making these statements. If someone accused me of this, a gigantic lawsuit would follow. I doubt there will be a lawsuit coming from Dolan.

Funny how different your reaction will be when the first accusations come pouring in against BSA.

You have not cited any “accusation” in which he admits ignoring a valid complaint against a sexually abusing priest because there aren’t any.

The only valid accusation you quoted was regarding a cemetery fund, a TEMPORALLY DISTANT financial management reaction to the bankrupting damages awarded to the victims.

As the Milwaukee paper put it:

In the decades before Dolan — now cardinal of New York — arrived in 2002, church leaders, including now-retired Archbishop Rembert Weakland, routinely moved pedophile priests from one parish or school to the next

Perhaps you have some cerebral damage that prevents you from understanding the passage of time as in “IN THE DECADES BEFORE DOLAN”

Put up or shut up about any priest accusation not handled appropriately Dolan, lying slanderer.

That you cannot see that what Dolan did was immoral is sad
I expect more from an ordinary citizen. You don’t even expect morality from a high church official. If this was anywhere other than in the church, you would be furious. Imagine your reaction if this was a govt coverup.

Just another intellectually challenged, lefty troll trying to push propaganda without facts. Maybe that works better on a lefty site have you tried that?

You are starting to sound like a cracker sheriff.... “”I know that n-word done something,,,I just don’t know whut””. (Just between us::::: Catholic=BAD, right?)

You make these dark statements about morality but have only cited his handling of the cemetery funds. You are spun up by the latest, a document dump.... Oooooohhhhhhh!!! That Dolan must have done something immoral!!!

You’re firing blanks, if you know what I mean. If the lefties at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel had found something concrete to indict Dolan in those 6000 pages, you can be sure they would have. Instead.. bupkis... a cemetary fund... and delays in HR processes in the Vatican (just like the government school systems, the Post Office, the Department of Agriculture). Big f’n deal, I’m glad my cemetery will still be maintained. I’m glad that an arch bishop with integrity came to Milwaukee and worked to get those criminals out of the priesthood so the church could return to its principals and service.

I am horrified by the immorality that happened 30 to 40 years ago. I am also certain that there is a non-zero number of rapacious, avaricious trial lawyers and easy-payday victims involved in the victims group. However, there are real victims and the legal system is what it is so we pay righteous penalties.

But that doesn’t give you low-intelligence bigots carte blanche to slander those who are correcting the problem and the church.

Lots of words and personal attacks. In the defense of pedophilia and covering it up, and you are trying to claim the moral high ground. Sad and pathetic.
