The TEA Party "officially" began with Rick Santelli's rant, IMHO.

"On February 19, 2009,[53] in a broadcast from the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, CNBC Business News Network editor Rick Santelli loudly criticized the government plan to refinance mortgages as "promoting bad behavior" by "subsidizing losers' mortgages", and raised the possibility of putting together a "Chicago Tea Party in July"."

If memory serves, conservative Freepers took a good amount of heat from loyal rank-and-file Republicans for failing to follow lock step with the party bosses.

Subsequent events proved the steadfast Freeper to be correct. In fact these days it's hard for any Republican hack to argue against forming a third party, as most have given up defending the indefensible.

I have an email I wrote to my State Senator in 2006. I told him I was ready to throw the tea in the harbor.

He replied that we needed more tea throwers before anything changed.

He took the (recent) Tea Party idea from Karl Denninger’s Market Ticker/TickerForum. It was there, where people talked of mailing tea bags to Congress, BEFORE Rick Santelli’s rant.

I still think Rick’s Rant was the trigger.

I think the Ron Paul people started the Tea Party in 2007.

The only way Republicans can excite the Tea Party again and bring them into the fold is if they fire spray-tan “boner” as Speaker of the House and put in place someone he Tea Party looks favorably on. They would also have to state that they were doing it because the weepy SOB failed to make the Tea Party welcome and squandered every opportunity they offered.

Santelli’s rant was the catalyst.

I posted these links in an earlier thread:

So proud to be here now, I just wish I knew about FR in its early days. Y’all did fantastic work with the White House chants, the So. Florida recount observers ... amazing times.

I think the tea kettle was simmering, but started whistling with Rick’s comment. He essentially branded the movement.

It was spontaneous, heartfelt, fearless and expressed the utter frustration of so many. Millions saw it as it went viral and many wondered if he would get fired or punished. It connected our small voices to a great visual picture and moment in our history.

"Boner" can take the TN RINO Senators Alexander and Corker with him as he exits. I will not financially support the TN Republican party until they stop thumbing their noses at conservatives and conservative ideals. Who needs Democrats when our two Republican Senators are voting like the Democratic party? Alexander needs to retire and go into partnership with "greenie" AlGore.
