Sounds like a plot written by Edgar A. Poe.
Shades of the “Cask of Amontillado”.
“The couple had one child, who drowned at age 25, three years before Nichols disappearance.”
Makes you wonder if that was really an accident, in hindsight.
Man what an episode of “Holmes on Homes” that would be, huh.

Wonder if the husband was a suspect in the drowning of the child also.

Also "Used in Evidence" by Frederick Forsyth.

F.O.B.?
“Hello Walls”

Good stuff.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman, “The Yellow Wallpaper.”
Strange dude, indeed:
He literally had seven or eight of those Dumpsters in his backyard also filled with stuff, neighbor Al Delaney told the Poughkeepsie Journal.Homeowner Judy Wyskida said she would notice James Nichols sitting in his car outside of his home because he couldn't fit inside the house. That wasnt the only eccentric behavior he exhibited.
We saw him drive past us one day and he had a dummy with a hat on in the passenger seat in the front of the car, said Wyskida, adding, It was just very odd.
