NEW YORK - The remains of a New York schoolteacher who disappeared nearly 28 years ago have been discovered hidden in a false basement wall in the house where she lived with her husband, police said on Tuesday.

“The couple had one child, who drowned at age 25, three years before Nichols’ disappearance.”

Makes you wonder if that was really an accident, in hindsight.

My guess is that the loss of their child filled their marriage with bitterness and ultimately murder. Many marriages do not survive the loss of a child.

Neighbors described the widower murderer as a compulsive hoarder.

Strange dude, indeed:

“He literally had seven or eight of those Dumpsters in his backyard also filled with stuff,” neighbor Al Delaney told the Poughkeepsie Journal.

Homeowner Judy Wyskida said she would notice James Nichols sitting in his car outside of his home because he couldn't fit inside the house. That wasn’t the only eccentric behavior he exhibited.

“We saw him drive past us one day and he had a dummy with a hat on in the passenger seat in the front of the car,” said Wyskida, adding, “It was just very odd.”
