Prescott Fire Department confirmed 19 firefighters have died while battling the Yarnell Hill fire on Sunday night. They're part of the Prescott Granite Mountain Hot Shots.

The wildfire was likely caused by a lightning strike Saturday night.

The Yarnell Hill fire, about 35 miles southwest of Prescott, has burned about 1,300 acres and forced the evacuation of 50 homes.

The fire started Friday and has not yet burned down any structures, but Sunday night firefighters pushed the blaze back away from communities, hoping to keep the blaze from overtaking any homes.

A growing fire in Yarnell forced about 600 residents from their homes.

Answer to your question: Hot Shots and others fighting wild land fires fight as a crew or team in close proximity to each other.
Sometimes the fire gets so hot that it creates its own weather - unpredictable strong winds, moving the flames with lightening speed.
These are young people.
This is very tragic.
Lots of prayers up for their families.

It looked like our storm went from East to West. I got an emergency warning on my phone to stay off the road until 9pm. This was around 6:45. If there had been a fire around here, it would have swept through. We had lightning in the midst of the dust storm. Our oldest son was out driving when he saw the dust. He drove around it and made it home just before it hit here.

When I logged on here, I read the news of these firefighters and was stunned at the loss. Prayers for the families of these firefighters, the firefighters still out there, and for all those families who are in the path of this fire.

The fire is about fifteen or twenty miles northeast of our place. I can’t see the fire from my house as there is a hill in the way. About two hundred yards down the road we can see the flames. They have opened a shelter at our high school here in Wickenburg. Odor of the smoke is strong in town. Area is buck brush, scrub, sort of on the line between Lower Sonoran Desert, (Mesquite, Saguaros, Ocotillos, Prickly Pear, Cholla) and Upper Sonoran Desert (Scrub Juniper. Manzanita).

I was in Prescott after Memorial Day and noticed how dry the area was, especially around Yarnell and Peeples Valley.

Oddly, heat everywhere while we had the coldest day in a month in Colorado Springs, cloudy, afternoon rain, put on my sweatshirt for my evening walk.

Hope we don’t get big heat tomorrow, but supposed to be a high of 74, and again on Tuesday.
