It could spark terrorism!
Mayor Bloomberg will urge Gov. Cuomo to veto legislation that would legalize the sale of sparklers outside New York City, arguing that terrorists could resort to using even kiddie fireworks to ignite a bomb. And thats a risk not worth taking, City Hall officials said.
The mayor opposes the measure, which the Legislature passed last week, even though it wouldnt apply to the five boroughs, where a ban on sparklers and all other fireworks would remain in effect. The bill would allow the sale of sparklers and other small novelty fireworks only in counties outside the city.
While this bill excludes New York City, legalizing these devices everywhere else in the state would, as a practical matter, have the same effect in the five boroughs, Joseph Garba, the mayors state legislative director, said in a memo. A recent attempt to harm innocent lives provides a frightening example of how legally purchased . . . fireworks can cause dramatic harm and even kill.
Garba cited the case of failed Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad, who bought a package of legal M-88 from out of state to help ignite his dud bomb in 2010.
Shahzad purchased fireworks at a Pennsylvania chain store, transported the fireworks to Connecticut and created a bomb-like device that he transported into New York City with the intent of killing and causing havoc in a busy tourist area, Garba said.
Shahzad had bought numerous packs of firecrackers containing gunpowder, which arent in sparklers.

I think Nanny Bloomberg needs a firework launched up his butt.
Nanny State PING!
Laugh if you must but I can now see terrorists lighting up sparklers on a plane taking off from Albany Airport to NYC on July 4th
Wadda you with the terrorists?
Holy crap. I sell fireworks in SC and anyone with a little bit of sense can spot a guy buying 100 packs of M-150’s.
Sparklers, though, REALLY? Even if you shaved the powder off the friction would possibly ignite it and burn you a little.
What is next on Bloomberg's agenda, 'Mayors Against Sparklers?'
[Sparklers, though, REALLY? Even if you shaved the powder off the friction would possibly ignite it and burn you a little.]
Right. Why should they bother with sparklers when they can use ammonium nitrate or commercial fertilizer and diesel fuel?
Yes, and while they’re at it, they should require permits at the superette for the purchase of kitchen cleansers and laundry soaps, and, of course, all kitchen knives should be banned.
Baseball bats?
Let’s get in step with the rest of the world and change the national pastime to soccer.
In fact, let’s just sit around sucking our thumbs and wait for those nasty terrorists to f*** us up the butt.
Must fight sudden urge to drive up to Maynardville LOL.
4th of July extravaganza, senility mixed with money
I don't think I've ever been in Maynardville. I guess if I had I'd remember because of the distinct aroma.
It’s just a few miles north east of Knoxville in Union County. Two good fireworks stores on the Knox/Union County line. One store has been there I guess since the 1960’s.
Gloomberg is the enemy of humanity.
How many innocent, helpless citizens realize that our slacker government permits anyone to purchase dangerous self-igniting matches?
They can be purchased by the boxful in almost any food market, convenience store, etc.
Many irresponsible people without proper training or certification purchase these deadly fire starters and store them at home!!!
That’s right - they just keep them right inside their homes!
Even people with small children at home are allowed to own and stockpile them!!!
When will our government start thinking about protecting innocent citizens from the potential dangers of these readily available firesticks?

But wouldn’t a BIG GULP extinguish a sparkler? Can’t we have both? Imagine a world where sparklers and Big Gulps could all just get along.
Does NYC ever drug test it’s mayors?
Thanks for the ping!
You people in NYC need to exercise just a little control over your Mayor.
“Does NYC ever drug test its mayors?”
Well, they obviously don’t drug test their voters.
