George Zimmerman Witness Can't Read Letter She 'Wrote' About Shooting
ABC News ^ | June 27, 2013 | SENI TIENABESO and MATT GUTMAN

A teenage friend of Trayvon Martin was forced to admit today in the George Zimmerman murder trial that she did not write a letter that was sent to Martin's mother describing what she allegedly heard on a phone call with Martin moments before he was shot.

In a painfully embarassing moment, Rachel Jeantel was asked to read the letter out loud in court.

"Are you able to read that at all?" defense attorney Don West asked.

Jeantel, head bowed, eyes averted whispered into the court microphone, "Some but not all. I don't read cursive."

It sent a hush through the packed courtroom.

Jeantel, 19, was unable to read any of the letter save for her name...

During nearly two hours of cross examination Wednesday in which he tried to raise questions about her version of events and accused her of telling several lies under oath, including about her whereabouts during Martin's wake.

"Under oath, you created a lie and said you went to the hospital?" asked West.

"Yes," responded Jeantel. She said she lied because she didn't want to see the body.

Jeantel became increasingly agitated and scoffed when West told her that she would have to continue testifying.

She is seen as a critical witness to the prosecution because she is the only person able to say that Martin claimed that he noticed a strange man following him and that he was scared. Jeantel said Martin described the stranger as a "creepy ass cracker."

Jeantel said Martin, 17, was walking home during halftime of the NBA All-Star Game when he became unnerved because he was being followed.

When will minorities realize they are being played for fools by the Democratic party and its hypocritical leaders?

I really don't think they care. They identify with this subculture as their culture. "Success" equals "acting white" in their minds. They thrive on their criminal activity and their government handouts. Their needs are met with minimal effort expended. Those of that culture who are dissatisfied with the lifestyle do escape it and join the working, the middle, and the upper classes.

Why would any prosecutor put on that witness knowing what was coming

I was on a jury where the prosecutor put on three that were as stupid, not as well groomed, and obviously under the influence of drugs. The cops she put on were sober, lying and stupid. Took us 30 minutes to find not guilty. There was nobody believable.

I admit to being out of it...what the heck is “cursive”??

Cursive is handwriting of the sort used by older creepy a** crackers.

"After they succumbed to the pressure to charge Zimmerman, they have dedicated themselves to persecuting him, no matter how flimsy the evidence."

And how does it help to railroad someone by putting on a witness which can only help destroy your case. There is nothing a witness can testify to that would even out such a devestating cross-examination. The prosecutor had to know this witneess would hurt her case much more than she could ever conceivabley help it. It doesn't make sense.

Since she hasn't graduated yet, and will be a senior next year (at 19 or 20 yrs of age), it's possible she will learn to read before graduation. Possible but not likely. If she spent even 1/10 the time studying as she does chatting and texting, she'd be at least semi-literate.

"Some but not all. I don't read cursive."

If she can't read cursive, she can't read. Unless the handwriting is so sloppy that it is illegible.

That's maybe 3%. On a good day.

About 15% of the adults in this country are illiterate

All part of the 2/3 of American voters that I consider with a problem as uninformed and/or just ignorant. America has been in trouble for a generation or more. Government did not fail us by itself it had the help of it's people.

Last night, I had the most wonderful conversation with a 13 year old boy about the Constitution. We talked about the three branches of government, the Bill of Rights, The various amendments and what they mean, etc.

I asked him where he learned all of this, as he was so erudite and informed. He answered, “In CIVICS class. It’s my favorite class. And my second favorite class is History. We are learning about WW2 right now.”

This boy is Puerto Rican, and attends a Public Middle School in South Florida.

And yes, he can read cursive.

So, blaming the school system for this idiot on the witness stand is a stretch.

Totally agree. Why didn’t the defense call to approach the bench and ask the prosecutor if he really wanted to go through with this. This is sooooo wrong. This is their star witness in a murder trial?

It was not some white hooded KKK member who prevented her from reading but her own beloved plantation overlords in the democrat party.

If she cannot read, she should sue EVERY teacher she ever had in the government school system. Not the schools (that would only punish the taxpayers further) but the teachers. Someone should have spotted the fact she could not read.

I wonder what the "elites" are going to do about this trial?

Just a guess: the MSM is going to try to drop it into the memory hole just as soon as possible.

The whole thing will be allowed to pop like a balloon.

At least that's what they'll try to do. May not succeed.

What's Obama going to say about Dee Dee?

Not as uncommon as you think

My wife is a high school teacher. Most of the freshman in certain areas can not read, write, or count.
