Posted on 06/25/2013 7:44:24 PM PDT by SeekAndFind
Massachusetts voters elevated a veteran congressman to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday, choosing longtime Democratic Rep. Edward J. Markey to fill John F. Kerrys unexpired term.
With 82% of precincts reporting, Markey held an 8-percentage-point lead over Republican Gabriel Gomez, and the Associated Press declared him the winner. Markey will serve 17 months; the seat will be on the ballot again in November 2014.
The race to replace Kerry, who resigned Feb. 1 to become U.S. secretary of State, began with the lessons of another Massachusetts special election fresh in both parties' minds. But the prospect of another upset fizzled after a campaign in which Democrats left little to chance and Republicans lacked the galvanizing issue that "Obamacare" proved to be in the 2010 race won by Scott Brown.
"The lesson from Scott Browns accidental win in 2010 was that Democrats must never take a race for granted," said Guy Cecil, executive director of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. "Democrats came together at the local and national level, and executed a campaign plan to ensure victory."
This election failed to generate much interest. The states chief elections officer projected a record low turnout, with just over a third of 4.3 million registered voters expected to cast ballots. That would be more than 600,000 fewer than in the January 2010 special election prompted by the death of Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.

Shocker. You can’t out liberal a liberal.
Thank God a RINO didn’t win.
Now Mass. has two absolute retard Senators for life.
That headline wouldn’t have been as funny prior to Barry Soetoro’s “evolution”.
To go along with all of their retarded voters.
Libtards vote for a libtard... another shocking demonstration of diversity.
Maybe if they hadn’t nominated the chairman of Republicans for Obama, they might have had a fighting chance.
He would spend 17 months voting with the Democrats on judges and amnesty.
Obamacare is not getting repealed by an extra RINO vote.
Boy, you are right about that. Much better than an avowed Communist won.
Now maybe those Masshole RINO orgs will stop spamming me to death. “Unsubscribe” from one and two more take its place.
(Anyone *else* make the mistake of donating to Scott Brown a few years ago? Or am I the only fool?)
So, next up will be a special election to fill Markey’s seat, as he vacates his House seat to move to the Senate???
I wonder how long it will take Markey to be sworn in to the Senate by Harry Reid and his boys. There were unusual delays with seating Scott Brown after his special election.
Ain’t it the truth...
Well of course he wins. It is mass-a-chews-butts. Where everything happened a long time ago and doesn’t make any difference anyway at this point.
Nope. I did it and regret it still.
Gabriel, you threw the remnants of any principles you had out the window for nothing.
>> Much better than an avowed Communist won.
Gomez says if elected he wants to help his party by moving it in five new ways.
Im going to help [the Republican Party] appeal to all Americans, as opposed to the privileged few. Im going to help them with gay marriage, Im pro-gay-marriage. Im a green Republican, I believe in climate change. Im going to get more of them to come over on my side, Gomez said. I believe in immigration reform, Im going to get more of my Republican counterparts to come along with me. And I believe in gun control and expanded background checks.
Markey... Gomez... seriously, at this point, what difference does it make?
Here is quote from brainiac who vote for him and why she voted against Markey’s opposition.
“In Cambridge, Lori Berenson, 51, said she voted for Markey mainly because she was skeptical of one of Gomez’s main campaign pitches: his request for just 17 months in office.
“He thinks in 17 months he’s going to accomplish what Markey hasn’t done in 37 years?” she said.
So she knows Markey has not been able to do anything with a lifetime in office but she voted for him anyway.
Stupid is as Stupid votes.
And now my attempt to win the Latino vote: ¿No es maricón verde este Gomez si mismo?
They run an Hispanic and still can’t win. Yet they think if they give more Mexican/democrats amnesty they’ll get their votes.
I know the people of MA must be as thrilled as they were the night John F. Kerry was first elected in 1984.
Imagine if there had been somebody in the race conservatives could vote for?
Or even somebody Republicans could vote for?
Another dope whose voice is enough to drive me out of the TV room...
John Adams would have understood how MA would turn out politically. He would have been aghast, but he would have easily predicted the nature of the people there.
How does a SEAL believe in gun control and background checks?
Right. It will depend on the, uhhh, “crap” that Harry wants to push through the Senate in the next few weeks...
I see that every day in NYC.
It’s actually kinda scary...
It’s 91 degrees out...Markey only won in the busing districts.
I completely agree....it doesn’t really make a difference....
We got one critical Mengelecare vote out of Brown (yes, Mengelecare could have been even worse) and that was worth the effort. Brown was a gamble from the beginning, and he quickly exposed himself as a loser. Instead of riding conservative principles to a senate career, Brown ran scared from the Boston Globe and went squishy and - - surprise, surprise - - the people who elected him the first time around stayed home when they saw what an unprincipled coward he was. That wasn't the fault of those who took the gamble.
Look at all the people Rubio has thrown under the bus. A lot of people had high hopes for that assclown, too.
Gomez has said he is personally pro-life, but wouldnt attempt to change abortion law, calling Roe vs. Wade settled law, in an interview with the Boston Globe. He accepts exemptions like rape, incest or danger to the life of the mother, but none of that seemed to matter in the face of ads and stump speeches that painted Gomez as an extremist.
I want a divorce...
I’ve had disdain for Rubio from day one, and it was because of his fingers: you can tell he’s never changed a bicycle chain, cranked a wrench, cleared a brush.. I know it seems shallow but I judge a man by his hands.
Rubio has had someone do everything for him all his life.
I did have the pleasure of writing to gomez’ campaign chair telling him to shove it up his obama.
Maybe if they’d have run an actual conservative, then they would have won.
It’s not really a choice when you have two liberals.
...so now MA is represented by a black woman and a guy who sounds like Donald Duck...
Got one too, just unsubscribed immediate from the “we need your eminent support for our RINO Gomez” right after I received it! Didn’t have anymore trouble.
How can you talk about Señor Rubio like that?
Gomez started off squishier than Brown ended up.
Gomez was advocating a $10/hour national minimum wage!
DJ, by how many years did Markey break the record for most years in the House before being elected to the Senate? Markey spent over 36.5 years in the House.
The dems were caught a bit unaware in 2009 with the election of Brown. They made sure to undo that last November and last night. For a repub of any shade to win in MA is a once-in-a-generation event. For a region that has such an honored place in the historical annals of the birth of this country, it sure went whacko with its politics.
Now maybe those Masshole RINO orgs will stop spamming me to death. Unsubscribe from one and two more take its place.

I’ve had the same problem. I try to unsubscribe, and they won’t stop sending me email.

Agree. I’m not really sorry I threw the guy $25 or whatever it was.
But I AM really sorry I didn’t have sense enough to use a throwaway email address. :-(
