The highest-ranking Soviet-bloc intelligence officer ever to defect to the West claims in a new book that anti-American Islamic terrorism had its roots in a secret 1970s-era KGB plot to harm but the United States and Israel by seeding Muslim countries with carefully targeted propaganda.
Yuri Andropov, the KGB chief for 15 years before he became the Soviet premier, sent hundreds of agents and thousands of copies of propaganda literature to Muslim countries.
'By 1972,' according to the book, 'Andropov's disinformation machinery was working around the clock to persuade the Islamic world that Israel and the United States intended to transform the rest of the world into a Zionist fiefdom.'
'According to Andropov, the Islamic world was a petri dish in which the KGB community could nurture a virulent strain of America-hatred, grown from the bacterium of Marxist-Leninist thought.'
Those claims come from former Romanian Lt. Gen Ion Mihail Pacepa and University of Mississippi law professor Ronald Rychlak.
In their book, titled Disinformation, Pacepa spills the secrets he kept for decades as head of Romania's spy apparatus and secret police, the DIE, before he secured political asylum in the U.S. in 1978.

Propaganda can make pre-existing ideas more virulent and durable. There was anti-Semitism in Germany before Hitler, as well, but that doesn’t mean that his propaganda wasn’t crucial to his policies.
Bullcrap. It was the British who has started with islamist extremism back to a late 1940s to undermine both US and Soviet influence in the Middle East. Israel was specifically targeted because it wasn’t clear at the time will it be a US or USSR client and the British couldn’t afford a direct diplomatic confrontation with either superpower. Hizb-ut-Hahrir was the first terrorist organization as we know it and it’s function was to push around new ME players and help the British if not to keep their Empire to at least stay a mediator. All the rest of terrorist organizations there are rooting from it.
It was the British who has started with modern Islamic terrorism in ME. Communists has hijacked some elements of their organization a bit later but initially USSR was targeted on par with US and Israel. Original British idea was to keep leverage over Middle East using terrorism as a tool to contain Israel, US and Russians there.

I have no doubt that Andropov’s KGB tried to use whatever levers it could pull to gain an advantage over the US in the Cold War. But the US was a target of Islamic terrorism prior to the First and Second Barbary Wars in the early 1800s. That predates the Soviet Union by more than a century.
The KGB material had far less influence than the simple acquisition of Wealth by the Moslem rulers. When the umma gains excess wealth, more wealth that is, than the minimum to keep the population at a bare subsistence level and a tiny ruling class in opulence, then Jihad is. That wealth may be gained by conquest as most of it before the present era was, indeed, acquired, or it may come from controlling the trade routes and unabating piracy as was the normal state of saracen affairs up into the middle of the 19th century, or it may be due to being ceded the oil that westerners discovered in paynim lands but the effect is always the same and will always be the same. Jihad is.When Islam has not that excess wealth it is subdued and lethargic. When there is that wealth there is Jihad. There will be that warfare between Islam and everyone else until everyone in the world is one narrow type of Moslem or until no one on earth is is a follower of Mohammed.
Moslem violence against non Mohammedans is more virulent as Moslem rulers gain the wealth to support it. No other influence is needed or has any additional effect. KGB money, little as it was compared to the riches gained from Oil, had some effect because it added to the resource surplus that goes to Jihad.
Yes, Muslims were Muslims forever but we have to admit that their tactics has changed in the middle of 20th century.
Before Barbary Wars they felt on par or superior to Western powers, in the middle of the 19th century Muslims knew they can’t stand Russia pushing around Russian allies in Balkans and turned for British protection (Crimean War). And the realities of post-WWII world made their boss the Britain irrelevant so they couldn’t openly challenge both Russia and a new active players: Israel and USA seeking to cut the British influence in the region down to it’s present weight.
Teaching Muslims to bomb restaurants, take civilians hostages and hijack airliners was a part of British non-conventional response. They’ve dreamed to see others bogged down there seeking British expertise to get out and the rest is history.
