CALGARY -- It could be days or weeks before Calgary's downtown core is open for business, says the city's emergency management chief.
Bruce Burrell of the Calgary Emergency Management Agency said much of the downtown core is still without power but some residents and business owners will be let in Sunday to check on their properties.
But it's unclear how long it will take crews to restore power to the city's business hub.
"There's a big chunk of the downtown core still without power," Burrell said. "It may be without power for days, it may be without power for weeks."
Edmonton fire crews are sending 100 people and pieces of equipment to help pump water out of buildings damaged by flooding.
"We want to recover as quickly as possible," Burrell said.
The Bow River is stable but still flowing fast and the flow is chewing at the banks and berms, with water levels about three times the amount recorded in the flooding of 2005.
Residents in Discovery Ridge were allowed to return home Saturday while the all-clear was given just before 6 p.m. (MT) to those evacuated from Quarry Park, Riverbend, Douglasdale and Deer Run.
The mandatory evacuation order was also lifted for part of downtown.
Burrell said the city plans to announce late Sunday its process for displaced Calgarians in the remaining evacuated communities to return home.
"We'll be starting to release communities as soon as they become available," he said.
Surfs up!
It was indeed a once in a century type of flooding.

Vast area of Canada ravaged by floods
An area as big as England.

As many as 100,000 people could be forced from their homes by heavy flooding which washed out roads, bridges and closed the Trans-Canada Highway.
Calgary city officials declared a state of local emergency and more than 75,000 Calgarians about 7 percent of the citys residents were ordered to evacuate, Reuters and other media reported.
With the Bow and Elbow rivers both flooding, thousands of others in outlying areas were also told to get out.
Chief Superintendent Kevin Harrison, of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, said the area affected by flooding was immense.
This is widespread just guessing, the area that is flooded would be bigger than England, he said. England is about the same size as New York state.
Environment Canada issued rainfall alerts early Friday for parts of the state.
Some areas have already received over 100 millimetres [4 inches] of rain since Wednesday night, it said. The heaviest rain is expected in regions north and west of Calgary today where an additional 10 to 25 millimetres are forecast.

One of my sisters and her daughter live in Edmonton. Haven’t seen much in the news about any possible flooding there. Does anybody know anything about this? I tried e-mailing her, but have gotten no answer so far.
If you’re daughter lives in Edmonton, she’s fine. I live in Edmonton and nobody has been seriously affected by any flooding yet. Although some of the houses near the river could soon be affected by some flooding.
Generally speaking, Edmonton is on too high a ground to be very affected by large flooding from the river.
However, if she put her life savings into betting on the Oilers getting the Stanley Cup this year, I cannot guarantee her safety over that!
I meant your sister. :)
Have you tried calling her?
Canada Ping!
I live in Calgary mad both my dear wife and DIL work downtown. DIL works in a law office and has been told to report tomorrow for work. Wife works for quasi government and was told it would be Wednesday at the earliest.
Like a snow day or two, which we get here rarely.
Cheers,
Jim
They’re supposedly on a watch today but I haven’t heard more than that.
As a Calgarian, of course, I hope Edmonton floats away! Kidding.
Cheers,
Jim
Thanks for writing me! I haven’t heard from my sister or her daughter yet, after having attempted to e-mail them twice.
You’re welcome.
I hear this morning that Edmonton should escape the worst of it.
Cheers,
Jim
That’s very good news indeed! Thanks again for writing me!
I have a (possibly old) phone number and address for her, and that will be the next step. Thanks!
Thank you very much for writing me!
I know Calgarians will be all right.
Their big heads will keep them afloat. :)
Oh, good. Best wishes.
Yep, like we keep the rest of the country afloat.
This is fun!
Cheers,
Jim
