My proposal was simple: I am a young female looking for a handgun for home defense, with the ability to be used for concealed carry down the road, and willing to spend $500 to $600.

...

First, each gun store discussed the basic factors one should consider when purchasing a handgun: functionality, reliability, ease of use and weight. Based upon these factors, the recommendation by every gun store for a weapon compatible for both home defense and concealed carry was 9mm caliber handguns.

...

The frequent suggestion was to keep things simple – choose a gun that is simple to operate and maintain.

...

Glocks were the most frequent recommendation

...

Whether the gun will be used for home defense or concealed carry, every store recommended that I invest in hollow-point bullets.

I’ve got a Rugger. No, sorry, just had to laugh when she said Rugger.

I was providing text from the article, not self descriptive.

"The overall consensus was that 9mm handguns are superior for personal defense because there is less recoil, they allow for accurate follow-up shots and the ammunition is equal to the effectiveness of that of a .45 or .40 caliber pistol."

Anybody else disagree with this statement?

I was thinking about joining that group. I listen to Mark Walters all the time.

Sir Isaac Newton has a formula that disagrees. F=MA.

I'm not sure I would recommend a Glock 9mm for a novice for self-defense. I think more along the lines of a hammerless .38 special. Point and pull the trigger until it goes click.

Yeah, but it goes ‘click’ very quickly.

I’m not a novice, and I LOVE my hammerless .38 J-frame!

I've got two in my family. One for my daughter and one for my wife. Very safe gun to carry in a purse. Very effective gun to have if you are under duress and/or novice. Point and pull the trigger, it will go boom. I carry one once in awhile in a pocket holster.

It’s likely that someone said something to the effect of “It’s better to hit someone with a 9mm than to miss with a .40 or .45. A 9mm will kill you just as well.” Then she ran with it.

My .40 has considerable muzzle flip, while my .45 stays on target much easier. I have nothing against 9mm, but I prefer the .45 - and I’m certainly not going to volunteer to stand in front of anything, whether it’s .17 or .50.

"Anybody else disagree with this statement?"

I suppose if it is a sold strike between the eyes of the perp, it is basically equal in effectiveness, but otherwise, make mine a .45 ACP, 'cause shooting twice is just silly!

Additionally, the larger the gun, the more velocity of the round. This equates to a more deadly projectile and that is particularly important for home defense purposes. As you would expect with a larger gun, the magazine holds more ammunition – usually between 10 and 18 rounds – as compared to a .380, which while easier to conceal, typically holds fewer rounds.

Did a Star Wars character help write that first sentence? Yoda should have written: "barrel the longer is, the more velocity of the round".

I would agree up to a point. I don't believe that recoil differences between the 3 rounds in question should be a deciding factor in that they are all manageable with enough practice. 45ACP is unquestionably a better performing round than a 9mm, but the 9mm is still effective. It is the additional rounds per platform is where the 9mm pulls ahead IMO.

Here is a link to a video of 9mm vs .45acp in both FMJ and Hollow Point and their effect on a watermelon. This is why I carry a .45 and have for 40 years.
