We the tax payer should understand the space will not really be vacant...Homeland Security will take delivery on the two billion rounds of ammo, and will need a place to store it before they order another two billion rounds.
You see the gov’t is really looking out for you after-all, no worries.
Probably paying back a donor with lease dollars.
The building the CG is moving out of was a scam in the first place. The CG got banished from the DOT building just off the Mall to the hell hole at Buzzard’s Point because someone with pull owned the BP building. The location is horrible and the owner couldn’t get tenants. The right backs were slapped and the right palms were greased and USCG Headquarters got shuffled off to to what in DC counts as the Gulag. At the time (Carter admin), the move was touted as necessary to provide increased space. It turned out that floor space in the Buzzard’s Point building was computed including hallways, closets, utility space, etc and compared to office-only space in the DOT HQ. It actually resulted in a reduction in usable space.
It is not just government buildings. It is commercial and residential properties as well. I drive around and see all the abandoned old Wal-Mart, and other large retailers, buildings that are sitting vacant and will never be used again. Neighborhoods are full of empty houses but they are building them as fast as they can. A big ponzi scheme that is destined to implode.
