Firearms have been flying off shelves across the country amid calls from some lawmakers to increase gun control, and manufacturers are benefiting from the surge in demand.
But retailers and makers of firearms arent simply relying on returning gun owners looking to make another purchase. Theyre also getting a boost from first-time buyers, thanks to an increasing number of people interested in firearms.
(snip)
In its annual Firearms Retailer Survey Report, the National Shooting Sports Foundation said there is an upward trend in the number of first-time buyers purchasing firearms, while more women are frequenting gun shops and ranges.
Theres no question that the number of people becoming interested in owning firearms for personal protection or shooting sports is growing, said Mike Bazinet, Director of Public Affairs at the NSSF.

"Liberalism is a dangerous mental disorder"
Around these parts it certainly seems true. Ten years ago it was common to see fathers and sons at the range. Now I see families including women. While my daughters have always enjoyed shooting, it is only in the last couple of years that my wife became more involved. I think it is a good thing, as long as men can get away from the women occasionally ... make that regularly.
More guns on the streets. Where is the corresponding spike in firearms crime?
Some of them may be buying guns, but I’ve yet to see an Obama bumper sticker in the range parking lot.
In the Gun Control Capital of Chicago: 7 Dead, 30 Wounded in weekend violence. (The weekend is not over yet)
Chicagoland were the honest citizens can't have guns but the drug gangs have the guns.
Right now somebody could probably make a lot of money writing a book with associated video, of a “First time gun owner’s guide to proper gun use”, but with a snappy title.
The idea is mostly marketing, oriented at people who weren’t raised with guns and have no gun culture in their family.
They *were* raised, however, with a negative image of what gun owners are like, and not knowing any better, “I don’t want to be like that”.
What would really get their attention is if, once they buy the book, they can download one of a selection of videos oriented to people “like them”, to show that people “like them” are responsible gun owners.
For example, videos based on race and sex. Imagine a video with responsible, legal, male and female, non-uniformed, *black* gun owners, as one of the possible video downloads.
That would be a mind blowing experience to many people, even if the video downloads with other people used exactly the same script.
But with so many first time gun buyers, who are caught up in the “So now that I own a gun, what do I do?” mode.
On another site there was a leftie I would regularly spar with. He was a classic “style over substance” kinda guy who believed that if he said something with enough sincerity it must be true.
I took him on as a hobby of sorts - he was the longest-duration leftie at the site and consequently looked up to by the other lefties - to negate his presence on the board as an authority figure.
He got irritated at my “personal attention” and adopted avatars of movie bad-asses (Clint Eastwood, Bruce Willis, Val Kilmer, etc) as a symbolic show of his machismo. Naturally, I was so frightened by this dazzling demonstration of testosterone-fueled virility that I just had to respond in kind.
So I adopted a care-bear avatar.
He didn’t get the sarcasm of my action and actually implied that his avatar could kick my avatar’s ass (I kid you not).
I gently invited him to get any one of his buddies to explain to him that talking tough or making the appearance of being a baddass doesn’t necessarily make you a badass, that wearing a firearm doesn’t make you a gunslinger, and that just because you can say utter some inanity doesn’t make it true.
I would posit that this is just as appropriate to many of those lefties purchasing guns. You’re right - they won’t practice at proficiency - it’s enough to know that they have one stuffed in a box.
I see it as a win-win ;-)
Perhaps the normalcy bias is beginning to crack?
That sounds like some of what I’ve seen on arfcom.
Will the Lefties acquire enough ammo to learn to shoot and improve their ability through practice? Probably not.
For most of the Lefties, they probably think that having a gun in their possession is a talisman that can ward off all manner of evil due to its spiritual Ju-Ju. I know it sounds silly, but I'll bet there are those that really do believe this nonsense.
