Our new tax code: Pick one!
Canada Free Press ^ | June 9, 2013 | Herman Cain

It is way past time to stop talking about replacing the tax code, and to start talking about what to replace it with.

The good news is that there are three great options for replacing our complex, unfair and outdated century-old tax code.

Only a fool or a power hungry bureaucrat would want to keep the complex, unfair 74,000-page tax code we have today.

Here is a brief description of each great plan: The Fair Tax, the Flat Tax, and the 9-9-9 Plan.

Fair Tax

The FairTax is a revenue-neutral, single-rate, federal retail sales tax collected only once, at the final point of purchase of new goods and services for personal consumption. Used items are not taxed. It includes:

•A 23 percent (of the tax-inclusive sales price) sales tax imposed on all retail sales for personal consumption of new goods and services.

New Flat Tax

The Heritage Foundation’s New Flat Tax (NFT), part of Saving the American Dream, replaces today’s complex tax system with one that is simple and fair. The New Flat Tax is simple, revenue-neutral, and will allow America to achieve its full economic potential. Among the details: •Currently, in addition to the income tax, the federal government imposes a payroll tax, death tax, and a slew of excises. The New Flat Tax replaces them all for individuals, families, and businesses with one tax system with one tax rate of roughly 28 percent.

9-9-9

The revenue neutral 9-9-9 plan would replace all current taxes, including the payroll tax, capital gains tax, and the estate tax and taxes on repatriated profits. The plan would establish the following:

•A 9% corporate flat tax.

•A 9% personal flat tax.

•A 9% national sales tax.

THE FAIR TAX WOULD BE THE BIGGEST TRANSFER OF POWER FROM DC BACK TO THE PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY’S HISTORY

A flat tax is still an income tax, and would leave the IRS in place.

It punishes productivity, and fails to capture any revenue from the illegal aliens and illegal activities like drugs and prostitution because most of them don’t report their income, but they buy stuff, so with the Fair Tax, they would start paying their share.

The IRS tried to take out the Tea Party, it would be sweet vengeance for the Tea Party to take out the IRS.

The hearings have done a good job of exposing how the IRS terrorizes Americans with the threat and expense of an audit.

Say no to terrorism - abolish the IRS.

Every discussion should point out that now is the time for the Fair Tax!!

Don’t replace the income tax with anything! The Federal government spends way too much as it is. 90% of the spending is unconstitutional. If the Feds can’t raise enough money through constitutional tariffs and excise taxes they could ask for voluntary donations. They can have a telethon fund raiser like on PBS. It would be interesting to see how much of their own money these big government loving statists would spend.

And if a state fails to pay its fair share, its voting rights in the House and the Senate are cancelled until the state has paid up.

Your solution is similar to the Cato Institute's solution, Reverse Revenue Sharing, except under the Cato plan, the States determine how much tax money they send to the Feds. (It is a standard percentage of what the State collects.)

States that like high taxes will send more than States that prefer Freedom. This way the States determine the Federal budget, instead of the Feds sending the States an arbitrary bill each year.

If you’re going to kill the current income tax [and the IRS], you must kill the 16th Amendment. Then, either a Fair Tax or 999 or other tax. If you don’t kill the income tax you’ll get BOTH the income tax and its “replacement”.

I’ll do ya one better

- Abolish the 16th & 17th
- Trim down Fedzilla to A1S8; all else goes to the States to keep or remove as wanted/needed
- The final Fed bill is divided by all States and Territories/etc. based on population, to be collected by said entity and remitted to the Fed.

Give the power back to the State, and more so, to the People.

Flat Tax is still a slave tax; ANY income tax is still. National Sales Tax? Not w/out A1S8 (Fedzilla is too big NOW, why keep it ‘revenue neutral’?).

Your post: “Here’s a better idea: The FIFTY BILL”

So, a future Obama type would send the states a bill that was $1 Trillion more than the year before and the states would dutifully figure out a way to pay their “fair share” of what Washington says they “need”? Don’t see how that would be workable.

There would have to be some serious restrictions on what the federal government could spend money on (requiring a constitutional amendment to reinforce the original intent behind the enumerated powers and 10th Amendment) and something like a balanced budget amendment to prohibit deficit spending to boot.

Actually, it seems to me that it might be a bit more doable to do it in reverse..the states would send the President/Congress a statement of income (the amount of money they are willing to send in for operation of government) and the government would be forced to figure out a way to live on that for the year.

NO NO NO; then more yankees will be fleeing to Texas and Florida where the base taxes are low. States that get more in return than they pay now i.e. MD, VA and NY etc. will be forced to pay their fair share.

Here''s a thought. Why cycle any of the money thru the Feds. Just keep all but the Defense budget in the States and and let the states manage and legislate (or not) the over regulated parts of life. I'm just saying. (too much wrong with the Fifty plan to be good)

Time to put on the tin foil. I am sure the NSA is bearing down on me now.

Fair Tax!

Won't a "Fair Tax" of 23% plus State, County, & Local sales tax levies drive the price of consumer goods into the stratosphere and consequently the economy into the mud?

I'd think the 9-9-9 plan a better choice as individuals would fare better w/ 18% federal as opposed to 23-28% Fair or Flat.

While the Flat tax claims to eliminate "payroll tax, death tax, and a slew of excises" the Flat and 9-9-9 schemes make no such claims. It would make more sense to see each of the proposed plans in their final form before falling for deceptive wording.

Regards,
GtG

PS Almost anything would be better than what we have now.

A constitutional amendment could fix the total bill at a percentage of the GDP of the preceding year.

And...Senators would be more accountable to local and state pressure to keep spending low.

But,....I like your idea of the states sending the federal government a statement of what they are willing to pay. I will think about it.

In either case the entire IRS system ( every employee) would be completely abolished, The Fair Tax still keeps some of that in place.

No matter the system, taxes are passed on to the consumer in the form of higher prices. It is better to have an open and clearly understood tax that the hidden poison **all** of us now pay.

The tax would be levied according to the number of people over the age of 18. MD, VA, and NY would pay their fair share.

1) Senators and representatives would be under considerable state and local pressure to keep taxes low.

2) The amount the feds could demand must be limited to a fixed percentage of the previous year’s GDP.

But....I like the suggestion of some of the posters of the states agreeing among themselves how much to send to the feds. They have provided links. I will enjoy reading them.

That's truer of (all/any) government regulations, your wages and your benefits than it is taxes.

My problem is still that $1 goes to the Federal coffers but nothing close to that is returned to the states. AND they can decide (and control what the money is spent for, not by apportionment) to return more to one state than another.

Why filter any more than need be through the FEDS.
