Chains such as Rent-a-Wheel and Rimco are seeing business boom. Many consumers pay double or triple the cost of buying and face aggressive repossession policies.
When the tires on their Dodge Caravan had worn so thin that the steel belts were showing through, Don and Florence Cherry couldn't afford to buy a new set.
So they decided to rent instead.
The Rich Square, N.C., couple last September agreed to pay Rent-N-Roll $54.60 a month for 18 months in exchange for four basic Hankook tires. Over the life of the deal, that works out to $982, almost triple what the radials would have cost at Wal-Mart.

Being in debt completely sucks. If the couple has cards, they’re probably being extorted to the tune of ~30% interest. Yes, it’s extortion, but I’m not demanding that asshole, lawmaking heroes step in to change it.

When it comes to the love of money, many people will do almost anything, we even see this with large companies like phone companies and cable, and banks, to much of America, God isn’t looking when it is ‘business’.
This story demonstrates an appalling lack of resourcefulness (and more evidence of the dumbing down of America that is the result of the welfare nanny state). If you’re that desparate, just go to a junk yard. If nothing else, you can always get four of the “doughnut” spare tires and drive around on those until you can save up the money for Wal-mart tires.
I really don’t believe this is so much about tires, as it is about ghetto rims. It’s not unusual where I live to see what
appears to be a $500 car with 2 grand worth of rims. Used tires can still be picked up fairly cheaply.

There’s a ‘rent a tire’ outfit down the road from me. I’ve been passing the place for a year and half now, and never did understand what the heck was up with their business name. Thanks for the explanation.
Capitalism is the most efficient economic model to date.
But no one said Capitalism had a soul, conscience or morals.

Our system was designed for a moral and religious people. It cannot and will not work for any other. That applies to free market capitalism as much as it does to a democratic republic.
When I was I kid, I used to ride the Lake Street El trains down into the loop and back for fun (25¢).
As the train passed through the poorer areas, you could stare into the tenement living rooms. They all had color TVs, which were not the default, and not cheap, at that time.
Later, I had the experience of driving through northern New Hampshire and Vermont. It was startling, passing by trailer-housed subsistence farmers and noting the satellite dishes in the backfrontyards, next to the clotheslines.
I was at a party in the park for three days and when I finally went to my car there was a creep with a van who was obviously getting ready to steal my tires.
Shady businesses and corporations are at war with capitalism, not someone who bemoans the greedy sleaze balls who think that God isn’t watching when they are at work.
Junkyard or an individually owned garage or tire shop. I just got 2 decent 195 / 60 R 15s for $30 mounted and balanced.
