Soldier Told Not to Read Levin, Limbaugh or Hannity in Uniform
radio.foxnews.com ^ | 6-7-2013 | Todd Starnes

Posted on 06/07/2013 12:02:53 PM PDT by servo1969

A veteran member of the U.S. Army Band said he is facing retribution and punishment from the military for having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his car, reading books written by conservative authors like Mark Levin and David Limbaugh, and serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches at his promotion party.

Master Sgt. Nathan Sommers, a 25-year Army veteran and conservative Christian based at Fort Myer in Washington, believes his outspoken opposition to gay marriage prompted higher-ups to take a closer look at his beliefs. The recipient of an Army Commendation Medal and a soloist at the funeral of former First Lady Betty Ford, Sommers said his core beliefs are enough to mark a soldier for persecution in today’s military.

“It seems like with the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – that the Christians have been the ones who’ve had to go underground and in the closet – for fear of retaliation and reprisals,” Sommers told Fox News. “Christians feel like they can’t be forthright with their faith. They have to hide.”

Ret. Navy Commander John Bennett Wells is representing the master sergeant. He said there is no doubt in his mind that the U.S. military is discriminating against Christians – and specifically his client.

“There’s no question about it,“ Wells told Fox News. “Because he is religious, because he feels that homosexual conduct is wrong for religious reasons, he is basically being persecuted.”

Lt. Col. Justin Platt, an Army spokesman at the Pentagon released a statement to Fox News noting that the military branch cannot comment on ongoing investigations or administrative actions.

Army documents obtained by Fox News indicate Sommers was told that his actions bordered on being disrespectful to President Obama and the “slightest inference of disrespect towards superiors can have a demoralizing effect on the unit.”

Depends on the superior. In this case I would be happy to see a fellow soldier identifying stupidity.

Another assault on religious freedom using military regulations as a cloak to hide the real intent. Although the anti-Obama bumper sticker is a bit confrontational, reading material by conservative authors is hardly a threat to military morale in any way. This none-too-subtle attack on a soldiers constitutional right to oppose ‘gay marriage’ using unrelated justifications to penalize him should not stand.

The anti-Obama bumper stickers are probably over the line for a member of the military but reading material limitations are an overstep for the brass, IMO.

...having anti-Obama bumper stickers on his car, reading books written by conservative authors like Mark Levin and David Limbaugh and serving Chick-fil-A sandwiches...

The original story was about the Master Sgt. catching flak for serving Chick-Fil-A and celebrating the DOM act.

It seems his Obama sycophant superiors have been busy digging up more 'dirt'.

Once in the Military the UCMJ now has your rights in it. Your Rights are not the same as a civilian.
I remember basic training it is good to hold on to your politics but keep them to your self, Especially in Uniform as you Represent the Armed Forces.

This is precisely the desired effect.

Imagine a military filled with faeries, moslems and commies.

They would have no problems shooting their fellow Americans, because they really are not “us”.

When I checked in to boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training Center in 1961, I was told that until we finished basic training we were only allowed two books; the Bible and our Bluejacket’s Manual.

I take it the Bible is out now?

I’m pretty sure that the military is being purged of real USAians. Many units are being downsized, supposedly via raffle, to determine who leaves.

I’d bet real money that there usually isn’t any raffle involved; political and religious components determine who stays. When Detroit car companies where _saved_ by USG, of the thousands of dealers closed, 85-90% we owned by conservatives.

USA, eyes closed... Presupposing what was, has something to do with what is.

Everything is completely upside down. My father was 19 when he went into the Army in 1943. There turned out to be a queer in his barracks who made a pass at one of the men. The fag was thrown out with a dishonorable discharge.

Now, our military is in love with sodomites.

What is the approved list of authors for A Correct Citizen?

We lost education to the Progressives in the late 19th century. The media went whole-hog to the left in the sixties, followed soon by the bureaucracy which became overwhelmingly liberal.

Now, we've lost the military. What's left?

A family member, at the age of 18 in 1945, was disturbed by something similar in a Navy barracks. He didn’t know what was going on - had not yet heard of homosexuality.

Very honest here. He never said anything until about the 1980’s.

I agree that there is a different standard once in the military, but being told what they can't read?

I was in the service and we were never told what materials we could or could not read. (as long as it didn't involve national security.)

I also had great discussions on religion with my buddies while in the barracks.

I am afraid the military is not what it once was.

On duty...you boss controls you. Off duty, do what you want. Has that ever been different?

Back in the day, I don’t think I would have said anything about a political book, but no one was ready Penthouse or Playboy on duty.

Its a judgement call. In this case, probably bad judgement, but its still the bosses (CO’s) call.

I agree. The Master Sgt. (E-8) has 25 years of service already, more than enough time for him to retire and collect his pension/benefits. He may also be at the maximum service time allowed for his rank. I believe that the most service time an E-8 can have is 25 years, then they must retire/get out. Extensions beyond 25 years service for E-8's can be requested and obtained from higher command, but are rarely granted.

With this all going on, this Master Sgt. would be well served to put in his retirement papers ASAP. If the Army/Military no longer respected my religious/political beliefs, then it would make sense to me to move on, especially if I already had enough service time for full military retirement.
