In an email to supporters this afternoon, Americans for Responsible Solutions, the gun control group formed by former congresswoman Gabby Giffords, urged New Jersey governor Chris Christie to appoint an interim senator who supports background checks.
"Senator [Frank] Lautenberg cannot be replaced," Giffords and her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, wrote in the email under the subject line "Chris Christie's Big Decision."
"However, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie must now select a successor. And he should pick one who supports expanding background checks to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the deranged."
Christie announced yesterday that he'll hold a special election, as soon as possible, to elect a new U.S. senator, following the death of Lautenberg on Monday morning.
Christie cited the urgent need for New Jersey citizens to pick their own representative given the many important national debates now occurring in Washington, but, by statute, that election can't take place until mid-October.
That lag could mean it's a Christie appointee who weighs in on a number of crucial votes, including on an immigration reform bill, which is expected to occur before July 4, and, possibly, another vote on expanding background checks.
After the compromise Manchin-Toomey amendment failed by just a few votes in April, supporters vowed to rally support and bring the bills back again before the end of the year for another vote on the measure.
"As we move closer to a second vote on background checks, this decision could make the difference between passing background checks, or another crushing defeat," Giffords and Kelly write in the email.
Shortly after the Manchin-Toomey amendment failed in Washington, Christie unveiled a new measure to strengthen New Jersey's background check system, by mandating that mental health records be a part of the background checks.

It is incredible to me to see these diabolical pieces being put together. The Left in this nation is marching at warp speed towards tyranny. They are violating every amendment to the Constitution, and they are going to use Soviet psychiatric abuse techniques to label citizens (including veterans) as mentally defective in order to take away their God given rights.
Glen Beck is no longer "out there" - he is proving to be prophetic.
Doubt Ms Giffords had much input into the correspondence...
There is no Federal Bureacracy that has not been fully taken over by the the communists in order to force by regulation and harassment their goal of a Soviet North America.
While we still have Congress, we had better shut the entire thing down before they start killing their opposition. We are heading into very perilous waters.
Any sympathy I once had for Giffords has now evaporated. She is now the enemy, every bit as much as Feinswine, Soetoro and Schumer et al.
gabby the drooler.

Her husband must have graduated from the Sarah Brady School of Earning Income from Home...
I just got a packet of crap from those asshats. They and mares against ill-eagle guns need to stay out of other peoples business. The push by those two POS groups for Governor Sandoval to sign an intergalactic background check (SB221) here in NV is unbelievable. He says he won’t sign it so we’ll see. Should get tossed in the round file in the next few days. At least we’re hopin’ and prayin’.
Of course us Freepers knew all along!
I am really disgusted at the way people like Mark Kelly and Susan Brady use their spouses to promote themselves and their tyrannical agenda.
Oops...Sarah Brady.
Asshat. He’ll probably do it too. He could have appointed the head of the NRA to the seat, effective till the 2015 congress is sworn in, and there wouldn’t have been a damn thing the commies could have done about it, but NOOOOOO, he has to make sure the seat stays safely totalitarian with a special election. Butthead. If he keeps on like this, I bet he gets the GOP nod for 2016.b
what a farce!!!
