If immigration reform is on the table, two additional things need to be included which must be non-negotiable:

> government issued photo ID required to vote as part of a comprehensive voter rights reform

> there must be a reasonable cap on how many illegals get citizenship regardless of how many apply... because we do not know how many are really here and also may have trouble identifying some who sneak over now in order to get their citizenship

Personally, I am for enforcement first with removing all financial aid including public school to those here illegally... but I would be open for discussion if we could get real border enforcement, and voter rights reforms done.

It must have teeth so that parts cannot be selectively enforced or parts struck down by runaway courts.

From the article: Prohibits illegal aliens convicted of serious misdemeanors, such as domestic violence, aggravated assault, child abuse, violation of a protection order, and drunk driving, from receiving RPI status.

I have to say (somewhat tongue in cheek) this one provision would disqualify most of the illegals in my area. But seriously, please don’t under estimate Senator Cornyn. He has successfully navigated the political waters of Texas for many years and is no one’s fool. He is quite aware this amendment is a poison pill and also a vehicle for allowing Rubio and others a graceful exit from an untenable position. The legislative process is not so much about fighting as it is about winning.
