Marines at Camp Leatherneck in Afghanistan will lose a key daily meal starting Saturday, causing some to forgo a hot breakfast and others to work six-plus hours without refueling on cooked food, according to Marines at the base and Marine Corps officials. The midnight ration service — known there as “midrats" — supplies breakfast to Marines on midnight-to-noon shifts and dinner to Marines who are ending noon-to-midnight work periods. It's described as one of the few times the Marines at Leatherneck can be together in one place.

That sucks. Midnight chow was usually the best meal. Always a good time, coming back off a late patrol and hitting it up with my fellow PLs. Hopefully this means they’re closing Leatherneck soon so these guys don’t have to put up with this for long.
There will be a bath house opening up however and also a class on “women’s needs in a combat zone” for those who are hungry to attend.

Know what they mean. We ate C-rations for all three meals while humping in the Central Highlands of Vietnam. One day we found out that our commanding officer, a stupid captain with his head up his rear end most of the time, always wanting body counts, etc., turned down a hot meal for us because he felt it would take up too much time getting the choppers in and out and bringing in the hot chow. We almost had a riot. About a week later we finally got it. The hot cherries that the mess guys sent us was from Heaven above!!! Hot cherries in a hot cherry flavored sauce and out in the boonies without a bath for 35 days!!! Heaven.

I remember the Navy midrats, the favorite meal of the day. The meal usually consisted of leftovers plus eggs to order, SOS, left over deserts all manner of good stuff. Most Navy chow halls put out pretty good chow. I do hate to see the Jarheads suffer for no apparent reason, morale will go in the tank.
