"How many over 50 year old bridges are there in the US. Probably a lot."

If you're willing to look outside the US, the Romans managed to build bridges that have lasted a lot longer than 50 years. The one below has been around for close to 2000 years. So where did all that shovel-ready stimulus money go?

Here’s yet another trumped up “crisis” they don’t want to let go to waste.

What they’re after is another Public-Private Partnership (think Fannie and Freddie) for infrastructure. Trillions go into the tender loving care of highly paid and bonused political appointees. It will be disbursed based on political, crony, and social engineering criteria. Whether your crumbling bridge or highway system gets competently and quickly repaired or rebuilt does not enter into the equation.

“The big secret is it all went to teachers and other government unions to keep them working and paying dues.”

That is certainly what has happened in NJ; not only is the infrastructure falling apart, but a lot of cops, firemen, unternured teachers, and even tenured teachers with little seniority have been thrown under the bus. As for the taxpayers themselves, they were thrown under the bus years ago; their foreclosed homes and the flight of American taxpayers (corporate and individual) stand in silent testament to that.

Thank you.

Tell those hyperventilating idiots on FOX that “functionally obsolete” does NOT mean “obsolete” or that the bridge is broken and needs to be fixed/repaired.

It means it hasn’t adjusted to meet more modern criteria. That’s all.

“They have been wasting all of their money on trains and tunnels rather than keeping up our roadways.”

Governor Christie here in NJ canceled a project for a third tunnel connecting northern NJ to NYC (under the Hudson River); there simply was no need for it as NYC has continued to bleed jobs and NJ has continued to bleed workers anyway.

When the left maintained that the tunnel was necessary because “people might want to see a Broadway show”, there was nothing left to say. Few people that have interest in Broadway shows have the money anymore, and the dark hordes that have been imported to replace the Americans fleeing this whole area don’t give a hoot about Broadway. We’re hoping to just them accustomed to wearing pants.

The democrats already sent all the “roads and bridges” money to the unions who then sent it back to the democrats all nice and laundered.

So where did all that shovel-ready stimulus money go?

Instead of bridges, it went into projects like this bike trail. Stimulus funds helped pay for this bike path that goes between an Indian casino and the main part of the reservation. It has solar powered lights that sense approaching bikers, walkers, joggers, and turn on automatically. This trail is about 40 miles from the bridge span that was taken out by the truck. Only a handful of people use this trail while that bridge used to serve 70,000 vehicles a day.

That boondoggle would have likely fixed a couple of bridges.

Gee Congressman, why don’t you ask your buddy to the South Pete Defazio. He chaired the Committee when you guys were in control. Lots of road work and Bridge repair went on in Oregon and other parts of Washington during that time....guess you must have missed the boat on that

Not quite, but a couple of these boondoggles could have replaced that bridge. Yesterday on CNN, Tapper was going on, pushing the infrastructure theme without mentioning that the reason the bridge fell was that it was hit with a 60 mph battering ram. The only thing obsolete about that bridge design was that it was a classic truss design with an overhead. Nothing has changed about the mechanics, it is just that the government wants to allow bigger oversized loads on the roads.

The Democrat Party is a criminal enterprise.

That thought must be reviewed before any consideration of anything political.

They are all scoundrels and thieves.

oh really???

and what budget did Harry Reid, on Obama’s instructions, allow to go to a vote in the Senate in 2010, 2011, or 2012?

the answer is none

the only thing that Obama and Reid permitted was a crisis, a crisis every 11th hour for every year, in which the demand was to simply let Obama keep spending as he was, on the basis of the 2009 budget with its built in automatic increases, and raise the debt limit to make that possible

so what “additional” infrastructure spending was there to debate in that?

NONE

so, what is the idiot wash state pol talking about?

he’s talking nothing at all other than a talking point, not something real, not something that really happened

Exactly right. That’s why I strenuously object to these tolls and fees. They’re going to waste that too.

How dumb can the public be?

Of course we should all pay a lot of attention to what Baghdad Jim McDermott says in his interview with Al Sharpton, a couple of publicly funded wastes of oxygen if there ever was one.

If the Republicans are powerful enough to force bridges to fail. . . .

. . .why are you pissing them off ???

Just asking. . .

Bingo. And here we are with another crisis that the dems aren’t wasting.

We get a few, just by chance, including hurricanes and tornadoes, and accidents like this. If there aren’t enough of those to go around, the dems manufacture one, or else just make stuff up, like global warming.

I’m not saying that we don’t need better bridge maintenance, or that this could not have been prevented. But I find it rather ghoulish when the dems come out of the closet so quickly to politicize this. Even the funds that are set aside for road and bridge maintenance get plenty siphoned off by unions and cronies. I don’t know any details in this case, but remember the levees during Katrina? IIRC, many of them failed because work that was paid for was not performed, records were falsified under a DEMOCRAT administration.

Seeing is believing and I still have trouble - it would make more sense to believe I was in the Matrix and this was all a force-fed dream.
