To tell you the truth, I never really "got" the Boy Scouts at all. When I was a kid I wasn't allowed to join them (my parents simply didn't trust the adult Scout leaders around the kids), but a bunch of the fathers in our social circle started their own group that had a similar function as the Boy Scouts but without any affiliation to the Scouts.
I'm surprised more familes haven't pursued this option before, though I suspect a lot of them will now.

Months ago our church decided that if this came to pass we would dissolve our scout troop (yes, we have enough young folks to have our own troop) and start our own scouting program. We will be drafting a letter to the BSA giving notice of our intent and the reasons.
Enough is enough.

Look up Robert Baden Powell, and the Seige of Mafeking in particular.
Scouting is a huge part of the whole anglosphere way of thinking in the end of the Victoria era. There is a reason we use Kipling’s jungle book - the same ideas and the same way of life.
It’s also why it’s under attack as an institution.
