Chicago Jesuits settle priest abuse case for $19.6 million

CHICAGO, May 22 (UPI) -- Six men who charge they were victims of former priest Donald McGuire have settled a sex abuse lawsuit against Chicago Jesuits for $19.6 million.

The payout averaging $3 million a person is the largest individual amount awarded in the history of the U.S. Catholic sexual abuse scandal, lawyers for the victims told the Chicago Tribune.

Settlement of the lawsuit against the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus names a number of Jesuit superiors who for four decades kept McGuire's crimes a secret and enabled him to abuse more young men, victims' attorneys said.

Internal church records released Tuesday show that Chicago Jesuits consciously concealed McGuire's crimes for more than 40 years.

McGuire was removed from the priesthood and is currently serving a 25-year prison sentence.

I am overjoyed that these men won in court. The Catholic Church has tried to sweep this stuff under the rug my entire life. God will not be kind to these pedophile priests.

I went to a Jesuit High School in the Midwest. The Jesuits normally sent these wayward priests to Missions in North Dakota.

“The Jesuits normally sent these wayward priests to Missions in North Dakota.”

So this is how they covered up what was going on rather than turn them over for prosecution? I realize that these “rotten apples” are exceedingly small in number, but I think it’s been a disgrace that their “superiors” have suppressed the facts and kept these perverts from being brought to justice.

Largest individual payout per person, but a mere pittance against the single largest payout made by an archdiocese ever: $660 million ($660,000,000) dollars!

Let’s see now....

With an average payment of $3MM per abused boy, how long will it take the Boy Scouts of America to go bankrupt after sexual predators are welcomed to the BSA as “scout-masters”?

Which is why I have not and will not donate to any Jesuit charities or buy any of their magazines or publications.

The Church allowed evil into their ranks. They got off lightly... for now, but this isn’t the final judge they’ll face.

Problem:

Public policy usually weighs against suing charities (like the Red Cross, the Goodwill, the Salvation Army, etc.) because
that harms the general public (and in addition settlements have to paid with donated money).

If there have been criminal acts (to include obstruction of justice), then criminally punish those involved (including those
who covered up);

but it’s probably prudent to skip the oversize payments.

The Church has much deeper pockets than evangelicals; or school districts who have damage awards statutorially capped, do. A fact that doesn’t go unnoticed by plaintiff attorneys who don’t make a habit of taking cases pro bono.
