The state's regional Education Service Centers no will longer issue lesson plans - and will forbid their use after Aug. 31 - for a popular online curriculum system that became a lightning rod for conservatives who criticized it as anti-American, legislators announced Monday. The move is expected to leave school districts across the state, including some in the greater Houston area, scrambling to replace CSCOPE, as the program is called, before the start of next school year.

The article is completely biased. Not one example of why the curriculum was scrapped, just complaints about it being dropped from one person.
More like complaints from parents. It was a horrible lesson plan in the first place. Our AG, Greg Abbott was on the side of the ones wanting it gone.
Can only be a good thing for everyone. I’m sure the schools will cope with replacement lessons. Unless the “new” teachers don’t have the common sense to think for themselves.

Why teach cursive writing when everything we use these days has a keyboard?
Just teach typing skills?
Apparently she read (professional journal) where a study found that learning cursive writing develops a part of fine motor skills that nothing else does.
Glenn Beck was all over this. Am glad he was able to put the pressure on the politicians.
I don’t buy the excuse that school districts can’t come up with the money to develop their own curriculum. Are you telling me that teachers can’t teach without buying some online curriculum?
They complain about having to teach to the test, but it’s ok (i.e. easier ) to parrot some online anti-American curriculum?

Gregg Abbott is a good man. I know many that know him personally, like him, and tell it like it is. If he wasn’t genuine they would say so.
1. Lower pass rates were one reason. Big deal for a lot of school districts, especially when failure on CSCOPE end of year exams next year means kids are held back, regardless of grades.
2. Parents not allowed to see a child’s lessons until a child brings back graded tests. This infuriates parents who gave feedback on text books, but cannot see the lessons. Nor are tutors given access to these lessons.
3. Teachers cannot get fired for yelling at kids or failing to teach, but post a picture of a confusing math problem or convoluted English lesson and you get fired. Unions don’t like this.
It’s easier to parrot some online thing, yes, because teaching is not about the students. I’s about staying out of trouble with the feds who run the schools.
They have infected and overtaken Texas schools. CSCOPE is a natural progression.
I know a child, a valedictorian, majoring in History at University. Her mother had to pay her Univ. Freshman summer to read a western civilization tome. The child had been taught in some big stupid football school, the athletic field rivals the Meadowlands, History of the world via Asia. Not one course on Western, European, Christian, Catholic, Roman, Greek course and on her way to infect the university with her brainwashed idea of inferiority of western civ.
Her parents astound me. Pillars of Catholic life here in town. Why do parents allow this?

Parents are in charge of educating their children. They need to act like it.
There is a really easy solution to the CSCOPE mess - go back to the curriculum being used the year before.
Solution....the feds stop giving money to education, including student loans. They stop writing regualations. No more head start programs, no more subsidized breakfast and lunch, no more technology purchases, just put it back to the communities.
All this other stuff is just infighting about who gets the money. JMHO
Cursive writing involves some creativity and for ideas to flow from one word to another. Not convinced? Sit down and write a desription of something in cursive. Lots of intellectual stuff going on, lots more focus, Also there’s hand-eye coordination involved.
Thank goodness. Whomever approved that program should be shown the door.
In fact, any textbook from the 1950's would be better than this commie touchy feelie crap we have now. This isn't rocket science. History is history. Why are we constantly changing it?
Saxon Math is widely used and respected. We know how to teach math. It's ridiculous to keep searching for some new way of teaching basic education. Kids today are even dropping cursive writing so they can stop wasting time on it. Can you imagine a kid not knowing how to read or write unless it comes off a printer? And what reason do we need more teaching time during the day,.....to teach global warming and why you might have 2 mommies. To teach the new Obama allegiance anthem, or why Bush was the devil?
They’ll just rename it and bring it back.
There are some indication that if we taught cursive before print it would cut down significantly on the incidents of dyslexia.
