All they usually do is have the kids sit in hallways with their heads between their knees, at least that’s what we did as kids in Michigan.

This tornado was so bad, though, that the school probably just exploded, would not have mattered where anyone was. Happened to Lake School District in Ohio a few years ago—obliterated. Fortunately there was no school that day.

Yes, from the reports I saw, 75 students and faculty were in a hallway. The hallway no longer exists. I hope I’m wrong but I predict the death toll to continue to rise.

Prayers for those poor families.

I saw a news report where they were looking for kids in rubble. They had mentioned that the older grade kids
had left the school earlier but the younger ones stayed at the school. I thought that was kind of odd that they did not all leave. Not sure if this is the same school or not.

Same drill in MO, although kids upstairs go to first floor.

This is just wrong. Those kids are like sitting ducks. They had no chance against such a strong tornado. Why in the hell aren’t there shelters set up at schools in tornado alleys??? Young children depend on responsible adults to protect them from danger. Maybe I’m not thinking straight but if I were a parent I would be outraged if my child perished like that in a public school. If government has my child obligated to be in that building 5 days a week they had better make sure they are safe!

I also grew up in Michigan in the 60’s and we were drilled every now and then for a Tornado “Warning” which then, meant a funnel cloud has been sighted. We trained and drilled but a school without an underground bomb shelter or underground something is doomed. Kids sitting in the hallway is no protection at all and in states as flat and tornado-reknowned as Oklahoma, it seems to be a crime that they did not either have suitable protection or were drilled for events of this type. On the other hand, if this was a record-breaking, mammoth tornado then maybe there was no hope to begin with. Not sure but our hearts go out to all the victims...
