Congressmen: Were Conservative Car Dealers Targeted for GM Closures?

Two Congressmen are asking the Treasury Department if it inappropriately scrutinized conservative-owned businesses the same way it targeted Tea Party groups filing for tax-exempt status.

Republicans Mike Kelly (PA-03) and Jim Renacci (OH-16) circulated a letter Thursday requesting Treasury Secretary Jack Lew release documents detailing the process and methodology the Automotive Task Force used to shut down General Motors dealerships in 2009 during the automotive industry crisis.

Renacci's Northeast Ohio Chevrolet dealership was closed in 2010 after losing a battle with General Motors. Congress loaned General Motors $50 billion in 2009 after declaring bankruptcy, which resulted in the federal government owning a majority share of the company. Roughly 2000 dealerships received "wind-down" agreements, and while hundreds were able to survive an exhaustive arbitration process, Renacci-Doraty Chevrolet in Wadsworth did not. Renacci, then a Congressional candidate challenging incumbent John Boccieri, placed the blame squarely on President Obama.

“I jumped into the campaign because of what happened to the car business,” Renacci said in 2010. “This is another example of the devastation of this administration’s massive government intrusion into the private sector.” He went on to describe the government takeover of GM as "the Obama Administration dictating to small-business owners whether they can continue to operate privately owned businesses."

Mike Kelly has a similar story. He decided to run for Congress when it was announced that Obama's Automotive Task Force slated Wayland Chevrolet in Butler, Pennsylvania for closure. The dealership was started by Kelly's father in 1953.

Now that it has been confirmed that the Treasury Department unfairly profiled conservatives around that time, the Congressmen are wondering if that could have been a factor in the selection of certain dealerships for closure.

Yes they were. There were many stories back then from dealers complaining about it after not donating to the O camp.

Well, that was over 200 scandals ago, that was so 2009. B-P Seriously, I remember that too. We are living a nightmare.

btw- its not just that dealerships owned by conservatives were targeted; its also profitable dealerships owned by conservatives were shut down while money losing dealerships which were owned by obama donoating liberals were helped by the bailout to keep their doors open...

I know, there are so many scandals with the Obongo Presidency that if it was a Republican, doubly so if it was G.W. Bush, if all of this happened, I'd probably be able to see the smoke form all the torches in DC once I cross the Appalachians from Breezewood, PA on down. B-P

Sorry about the run on sentence. B-)

BTW, there hasn't been much done for many Hurricane Sandy victims, yet where is the hue and cry we had in Katrina? Oh yeah, I'm so dumb, I got to remember that their guy is in office and many of those people are not "Obongo's people." B-P

Good question but probably never amount to crap. We have no enforcement organization to respond if found to be illegal and don’t expect the House Republicans for anything. Maybe another item to add to the current IRS investigation but I can assure you it will not be brought up.

Congress loaned General Motors $50 billion in 2009.... uh no, the American taxpayers were forced to loan GM $50 billion in 2009.

Man, you'd probably crash the biggest supercomputer at CERN trying to track all these scandals. The screen would read, TILT! B-P I thought the Clinton scandals were the worst, this guy makes Clinton look like a saint.

I believe there were two dealerships in Little Rock, that were well run, shut down in favor of an out out city dealership partially owned by a friend of the Clintons.

Don’t forget about Joe the Plumber (from Ohio) and how his records were searched (and some made public) after his confrontation with Obama.

Ever read Michelle Malkin’s “Culture of Corruption”? I thought it was amazing how much dirt accumulated by the time she wrote it, but if she released an updated version today it would have to be a multi-volume set. By 2016 it would probably look like an encyclopedia.
