ICE released more than 600 detainees with criminal records

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

According to a new letter released to Sen. John McCain's office, Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers released 622 people with criminal records back in February.

The Obama administration claimed the controversial move was due to budget cuts faced by ICE due to sequestration.

"ICE's reprehensible actions put Arizona at risk by setting free into our communities hundreds of detainees who were guilty of criminal offenses, said McCain.

"The ICE officials responsible for this must face disciplinary action and must take all actions necessary to ensure that this never happens again," he continued.

The letter stated that 112 of those released had either level one or level two felony convictions. McCain's office said those convictions include extreme DUI, felony possession of drugs, vandalism and trespassing. CBS 5 News has confirmed at least one person released here in Arizona is a level one felon convicted of second-degree robbery.

ICE officials said they reviewed all of the level one and two releases and decided to "re-detain" 58 people that had initially been released.

In a statement to CBS 5 News, Virginia Kice, the Western regional communications director for ICE, said the department had to make a decision on how to best manage resources provided by Congress.

"As fiscal uncertainty remained (...) ICE officials identified and released detained individuals who posed no significant threat to public safety, were not subject to mandatory detention and who were appropriate candidates for supervised release," she stated.

It is very clear that they believe they are untouchable. They can enforce whatever they want. And not enforce if they so choose.

McCain’s not upset. He always does this song and dance to appear conservative at home.

It's very simple. Add up all the typical prison terms for all these crimes. Those 600 criminals may easily have 6,000 years of prison between them. Then divide that between the bureaucrats who made the decision, and incarcerate every one of them for that period of time - or for life, whichever is shorter. Pour encourager les autres, as they say in France.

As things are, government officials are effectively free to do whatever they want, and if they break the law nobody is going after them. This has to change; the government is not supposed to be an outlet for wannabe tyrants.

This is why we cannot have a so-called “path to citizenship”. Cannot be administered. Convenience will reign supreme to the detriment of the Republic. Prisons will be wide opened. And there will be no penalty for those who did this legislatively.

You've got that right, Rapscallion. The real path to citizenship is packed eight-deep with worthy people from all over the world who've been patiently waiting in line for years. They're the people who want to become Americans, not live on food stamps and welfare checks the rest of their lives.

I hope Arizona has good concealed carry and castle home laws. P>From what I've seen Arizonans are universally some of the toughest and yet most decent people I've run into in my travels.

If a thug picked a fight in the wrong place, they'd stand a good chance of being brought down hard from multiple directions.

Gun laws? Don't miss. That's the one everyone tells me about at least.

Criminal records? That’s nothing. The people we have to watch out for are those conservative Christians and traditional Jews... THE real enemies ... the ones who might vote against democrats.
