The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits climbed last week at the fastest pace in six months, a worrisome sign for the economy which has been hit by government austerity.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits jumped by 32,000 to a seasonally adjusted 360,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was the biggest jump since November and confounded analysts' expectations for a more modest increase.

Claims for the prior week were revised to show 5,000 more applications received than previously reported.

A Labor Department analyst said no states had estimated their data, and that there were no signs furloughs for government employees played a significant role in last week's increase in claims.

Doesn't the above sentence contradict the first?

It's funny that when the claims were dropping, they were saying it was e cause of Obama's policies. Now, there is a reverse and they are blaming "austerity" (I.e., sequester). It's funny that the sequester didn't cause and problems for the past 6 weeks...

Scandal #6 (or 7?). Labor Dept. will be revealed to have fudged jobless
numbers to reelect Obambi the Deer Leader. Well, it’s plausible.

In our case, it means a reduction in the rate of spending growth.

"government austerity can mean less spending on materials and services as well......" "Government Austerity" -- "Sequester" euphemism du jour.

It really has been infested everywhere. Some of the worst places where you hear BS propaganda is on your local morning drive-time AM radio by these same liberal idiots that quote these ‘studies’ about this or that (many of them about the next cancer causing no-no).

The all lie, all the time. They must get some sort of commission from Obama for the number of lies they tell.

Huh? So now the government is our main employer?

And there's no "austerity" anyway. Government employment rolls keep on going up, particularly as they hire thousands and thousands of new IRS agents to enforce Bambi's selection-of-the-fittest, spying health plan.

re: “a worrisome sign for the economy which has been hit by government austerity.”

I wonder if the “journalist” writing this article even know what the word “austerity” means.

Adding fuel to the fire (from a Socialist website):

[snip]US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel on Tuesday announced plans to impose 11 days of unpaid leave for most of the Pentagon’s 800,000 civilian employees beginning in July.

That's the darn problem with political manipulation of numbers. They can move them here or there. They can cascade them to another column. They can rearrange them and even reduce their value if offset by an identical increase at a time and place which will take place regardless of desire.

But at some point the numbers will reconcile with truth. That's the purity of numbers. The number is the cure for the human trait of lying.

Government employment rolls keep on going up,

Actually this is not true. Total government payrolls are decreasing even if you account for the Census spike in 2010.
