The night before Thursday's marathon committee markup, members of the Senate's Gang of Eight and their staffs huddled in a room in the Capitol to decide what amendments to their immigration bill they would let liveand what must die.
As a comprehensive immigration overhaul advances through the Senate, its chief architects will remain firmly in control of its fate. This week's drama at the Senate Judiciary Committee provided a valuable test run for the group, which must protect their bill from changes that undermine the principles they agreed on but accept enough suggestions from their colleagues to garner at least a 60-vote majority, if not more.
Its that kind of advance planning that helped the gang survive its first major test Thursday: a hostile amendment offered by Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa. The Grassley provision would have required that the entire southern border be under effective control for six months before illegal immigrants could register for provisional legal status. The current legislation requires only that a comprehensive strategy for border security be in place.

Rubio, Flake, McCain, Graham....support for any of these... and you ain’t Conservative
ROTFLOL.
I agree.
What the hell are they afraid of???!!!
Grassley's amendment is more than reasonable on its face, perhaps even a little timid. Six Months!!!
Rejecting such a modest amendment suggests that the Gang of Eight has no intention of the border being brought under control for ANY period of time.
” Rubio, Flake, McCain, Graham....support for any of these... and you aint Conservative”
Rubio, Flake, McCain, Graham....support for any of these... and you aint AMERICAN.
Fixed it.
Exactly so and Grassley called them out!
BTTT!!!
Yesterday, I suggested a “NAMBLA funding rider” attached to the bill : )
You’re TOO MUCH!
LOL.
Treason wears many faces.
You’re right.
For so long it has been said, "It is impossible and too costly to deport all of the undocumented workers."
Here's an American program to solve the problem. $25,000 will be paid to bounty hunters discovering and detaining illegals. Local law enforcement, Sheriffs, and ICE will accept and deport illegals. Contrast this with the $6.3 trillion in the bill, in which $210,000 of cost is distributed for each of the 30 million illegals.
Add a dead or alive clause to my plan and it will become more popular than hog hunting in TX. But to be humane, the dead would only provide a reward of $5,000 to the bounty hunters.
Yes, I am a sick twisted freak.
Not a bad idea. LOL!
Because in their view, their bill has already been marked up and amended in committee, their unauthorized, behind closed doors committee of ocho. Now they just have to run through the technicality of an actual public committee to get it to the floor, where any amendments will be similarly halted.
Yes...not American, too. The MS Ocho
They have no problem selling out our Republic.
It’s stunning!
Their idea of border security is a fence around the white house
Kill the bill!
Give the 11 million amnesty and give them Mojave Desert to live and play in! Vast lands and blue skies! Beach sand for every home!
