Gay Rights Amendment Offered to Immigration Bill
NewsMax ^ | May 8, 2013 | Reuters

U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy on Tuesday proposed a gay rights amendment to the Senate's immigration bill, prompting one of the measure's Republican sponsors to repeat his prediction that it could sink the legislation. "It'll kill the bill," Florida Senator Marco Rubio said in a brief interview. "There is a coalition of groups who are supporting immigration reform who will not support it if that's in there."

Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants and a possible Republican presidential candidate in 2016, is key to attracting conservative support for the bill. It remained uncertain whether the amendment would make it through the committee, which is controlled by Democrats.

The Leahy amendment, one of more than 100 offered two days before the Judiciary Committee takes up the bill, would allow U.S. citizens who are in "long-term committed relationships" to sponsor their foreign partners for green cards, which would allow them to live and work legally in the United States.

He knows what he's doing.

It's all a charade, per Mickey Kaus.

I've was lukewarm on Rubio and with his endorsement of this lightly camouflaged amnesty bill, I have abandoned all hope of Rubio being the kind of conservative leader the GOP desperately needs. Rubio was a fool for joining some of the most left-wing members of the senate to push this mess. Either Rubio has terrible judgement or, more likely, is another go-along, get-along RINO who talks conservative when it's convenient but acts liberal when he votes.

I agree with Senator Rubio that adding a 'gay rights' amendment to the immigration 'reform' bill will and should kill it. Whether by Democrat design or just Democrat arrogance, killing that bill would be a victory for America, even if most Americans are too disconnected from the grim reality of amnesty for illegal aliens to appreciate it's death.

To the question of what will we do if Marco Rubio becomes the 2016 Republican presidential candidate, my response is that unless he demonstrates a quick and verifiable reversal of his present course of pushing deeply flawed laws giving American citizenship to illegal aliens and shows a verifiable (by his votes as well as his words) adherence to the U.S. constitution, I will not contribut a dime to his campaign (the RNC) and I will vote independent. What is the point of electing yet another big-government RINO who does what Democrats do and puts the 'Republican' stamp on it? Enough of that.

No, Leahy is the homophile. Rubio is against special rights for the pervert crowd.

Exactly.

Ed Morrissey was completely right about this stunt-it's kabuki theater by Leahy, Schumer and the Gang of Eight schemers.

Placate your left wing base, when it's stripped from the bill call the GOP reactionaries.

A more interesting showdown will be with the Congressional Black Caucus, which is threatening to bolt if the Diversity Visa is scrapped-the one improvement in this horrific bill.

And if he becomes the nominee in 2016? What then?

Then expect Hillary to occupy the White Hut.

If there is not a real, viable candidate (conservative, tea partier, libertarian, WHATEVER) that Republicans can truly rally behind... this election will go the same way as when they fronted losing tickets ala Bush/Quayle '92, Dole/Kemp '96, McCain/Palin '08 and Romney/Ryan '12.

I expect if Rand Paul/Ted Cruz/Mike Lee and their allies keep pushing and pushing and pissing off the right people, there might be hope... but probably as a third party because the GOP/Rove Machine is defunct and without principle.

One bizzare twist, however, would be if the Bengazi crap has any sort of real ramifications and touches the Teflon Kenyan directly (it won't though)... I see Biden taking over, gun control really being rammed up our ass, he only lasts until the 2016 cycle, and because low information voters vote like it's a student council election then the Democrat ticket will be something akin to a Pelosi/Clinton 2016 ticket, handily voted in by the ignorant 50% of the population... much like 100+/- percent (most likely +) of the Negro vote went to 0bama. My advice is to buy land while it's cheap and interest rates hover around 0%, move away from any Blue or Blue-leaning state with big Blue pockmarks around metropolitain areas ("entitlement centers"), buy weapons, marry properly, and homeschool your kids to be pillars of local business and industry.

Maybe in 50 years things will settle out... Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union fell eventually... the whole of the EU is in process of collapsing... just wait it out in the woods and maybe in 2 generations we will have a viable federal government that is back to what the nation's founders intended.

It's not Leahy's first rodeo. Perhaps we should assume his intent is to kill the bill. So as to keep it as a campaign issue? To avoid getting blamed for something so unpopular? Others more Washington-savvy than I would know.

Rubio said this would kill the bill, I did not read where Rubio said this was a good idea but there are a couple saying he;s now dead because of this.

We live in a bizarre world

There's only one thing we can count on if this bill is enacted.

The GOP's rapid extinction.

I think that people are upset that Rubio was advocating amnesty in the first place.

You're displaying a defeatist attitude already!?

Of course not. Sheesh.

I just am not in the mood for another destructive cycle like we had when this site refused to support Romney and did all they could to bring him down.

I don't want 2012 redux.

Exactly!

He's the face of the open borders brigade in the United States Senate, and Schumer's partner in crime.

I didn't keep it, unfortunately, but I was sent a mailer from Mel Martinez's campaign importuning me for cash-this was when he was running for the U.S. Senate in 2000-where he promised emphatically to oppose the Bush amnesty.

Rubio is no different from any other two-faced politician who sells out Americans for political and economic profit.

He's simply scared that it will derail his precious illegal-amnesty. He's shown himself to be such a two-faced operator that I tend to doubt he has any particular moral objections to the gay agenda.

Either way, him being the point-man on illegal-amnesty gives him fleas enough to open a circus. He probably should actually -- it would give him something to do when he's not performing in the circus in DC.
