Your own black box (Inspired by little Trayvon Martin)

ORLANDO—Is it time for humans to get their own black box?

That’s the provocative question behind an ambitious project by four undergraduate engineering students from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, presented at this weekend's Cornell Cup in Orlando, Fla. Over the course of a school year, the Amherst team built a prototype “black box for humans” that you could carry around wherever you went, and could be activated to record audio of your surroundings in case you ran into trouble.

That audio recording—heavily encrypted, completely tamper-proof and admissible as evidence in a U.S. courtroom, per the Amherst team—would hypothetically serve as an unquestionable, unbiased on-the-scene account of a contentious dispute between opposing parties, say, or of a person’s untimely final moments. And while that may seem dark, the necessity of such a recording device reveals itself in painful detail given the project’s inspiration: The killing of Trayvon Martin.

Indeed, the precise particulars of Martin’s death remain shrouded in mystery due in part to the lack of audio or video at the scene of the crime. Had Martin been carrying some kind of always-on recording device, per Amherst engineer Brett Kaplan, much of the uncertainty may have been mitigated.....

I wonder who was trying to get into l’il Travyon’s phone records, right? I mean since there were records someone was trying to do so many, many times.

Maybe his fine, upstanding GF...?

If St. Trayvon had carried such a device, the prosecution would be seeking to quash that evidence too

Liberals will crap on this personal black box idea once the black boxes reveal what crime statistics reveal — that a grossly disproportionate amount of crime is committed by minorities, blacks in particular.

The first thing that came to mind was: May your slave collar rest easily on you.

Sure it may save a life or two, But really Now! For so little security received, we as a people, a so-called “free citizenry”, would be nothing more than slaves to whoever controlled those collars. Be it government or a faceless corporation.

It’s a felony in florida to record someone who has an expectation of privacy.

Wonder if the Black Racists in the Cult of Trayvon realize that such a device would also exonerate, immediately, someone in self-defense like George Zimmerman?

White Guilt Liberals and Black Racists probably never think of that....not with their Lynch Whitey mentally

in case you ran into trouble...

In case you ran into trouble, needed to make a phone call, and had no money? Yes, a Black Box would be perfect for this situation. All you need is one of those rotary-dial coin-operated phone booths.

Also, this "blue" one works today in many a turd world nation...

My question too. Who would have benefited from having such a “brilliant” device on them in this situation? I’m leaning towards GZ. Besides it was a justified shoot to prevent serious bodily injury or death. By law. Why is he being prosecuted? (rhetorical) It’s not like he shot the punk in the back of the head. Of course had tm had a kevlar hoodie he may have survived. To bully and burgle another day.

that you could carry around wherever you went, and could be activated to record audio of your surroundings in case you ran into trouble.

Throw in video, remote storage and make it impossible for it to be turned off externally so that the police can't hit a global off switch to shut down anyone trying to record them in their (mis)deeds. I doubt they would be so eager to grab grab a camera from a person when they know a dozen other cameras are recording them do it.

Stick some velcro on your smartphone and your shirt. Voila. Instant Chest Cam. Not only does it record, it can be used to triangulate your location.

How long before you have to reveal what's in your black box to prove your innocence.
Sure, it would be great if you *could*, it would be not so great if you *must*.

I’m not sure why this has to be ‘invented’.

Our sheriff deputies wear microphones, which transmit to a tamper proof recorder in the car. These recordings were used a few years ago in a court (murder trial).

So what has to be ‘invented’?

Liberals wouldn’t want that — it would expose them for who they really are.
