Forbes ^ | 05/06/13 | Tom Van Riper

The “Tebowmania” days in Denver are only 15 months old, but it seems like 15 years. And yet, when Americans are asked which pro athletes they believe carry the most influence with the public, Tebow’s name tops the list.

A unique set of QB strengths and weaknesses and an affinity for wearing his Christian faith on his sleeve combine to make Tebow a compelling public figure, even as an NFL backup. Whether or not he’s able to remain deeply ingrained in the public consciousness without eventually getting more time on the field remains to be seen. But for now, Tebow, he of 2.2 million Twitter followers, is still the man people talk about.

Sports is more social engineering than sport, so you can imagine when Tebow came along, that was not in the script. Should be no reason that a conservative not come to understand why the reporters are so enthralled with Political Correctness.

Watch for the zipperheads on the NFL Channel and ESPN just shaking their head, wondering what’s wrong with today’s sports fan.

Way to go, Tim. Don’t let the boneheads wear you down...

This is spite of media mocking. David Letterman has shown exceptional venom and bitternes towards him.

One last thing after watching and listening to this year’s draft idiocy, how sports fans can accept this ridiculous amount of racial stereotyping of white players is beyond me. If you do take these supposed experts seriously please inform me why, since I basically view all of them as jokers and clowns.

Most influential athlete . . . who can’t find a job.

Poor guy is probably falling back on building hospitals.

So the guy that checks out the butts of his fellow NBA players isn’t?

Better crank up the propaganda machine harder, MSM.

I love Tebow’s values and work ethic. I just wish he would set his ego aside and try a position where I might be able to watch him play on Sundays.

“David Letterman has shown exceptional venom and bitternes towards him.”

As Psalm 1:4 says, “The ungodly are not so.” Letterman and his ilk will never understand the gifts of the Spirit. Tim Tebow is already the winner, as all Christians know.

I'm pretty sure it's not ego that convinces him to play QB.

He's struggled with coaches since pee wee football to let him play QB. He's had a pretty good career of it so far.

Tebow is responsible for me watching NFL football again, after about 20 years. If he is absent next season, I’ll go back to that. I couldn’t care less about it otherwise.

We’ll see. The best I can envision for him at QB next season is as a backup for one of the “physical” QB’s.

When Tebow was in high school he had to go to one of the worst football programs in the county so he could play QB. They won the state championship his senior year.

He'll have to go to a struggling team in the NFL in order to have an opportunity, also.

He could have chosen to play baseball for a lot more money, less injuries, and a longer career. He thinks he can have the most influence for his faith and charity by being an NFL QB. This poll shows he's achieved his goal so far.

Like I said, we’ll see. The NFL is a whole different game than high school or college. Tim isn’t the first Heisman winner to struggle adapting to it.

It’s ok to be an NBA fag but it isn’t ok to be an NFL Christian.

I agree the media has been relentlessly negative about him and that he has a lot of admirable qualities but most influential athlete? Seems a stretch.

Tebow took a losing team to the playoffs and went deeper in the playoffs than his sainted replacement, Payton Manning. Yet every sports show says he’s not an NFL quarterback.
