I sure hope so, but don't bet on it.
There is a lot of pressure on both Dems and Republicans from brick and mortar stores to force online outfits to charge sales tax. And of course local and state governments are greedy for the money.
But the online outfits in their states already do. Do the brick and mortar stores charge the sales taxes of the jurisdiction where all of their customers shop?
And of course local and state governments are greedy for the money.
Nearly every state with a sales tax has a mechanism by which they can collect sales tax on out of state purchases made by their residents.
To be accurate - brick and mortar places want online outfits to COLLECT sales tax (for every sales tax jurisdiction in the country). B&M stores only collect for ONE jurisdiction.
Fairness, my a$$.
The consumers are responsible for remitting the applicable sales taxes for online orders. I fail to see fairness in forcing online retailers to send checks to up to 1900+ jurisdictions, in lieu of their consumers following the established law (which already taxes internet purchases).
This is only fair for the likes of Amazon or Walmart, which already have to deal with so many jurisdictions due to their B&M presence.
JMO, natcherly!
