The westbound lanes of the San Mateo-Hayward bridge were closed for several hours Saturday night due to a deadly fire involving a limosine.
The California Highway Patrol said the fire was first reported around 10 p.m. in the third lane of westbound state Highway 92 at the bridge's decline. As many as ten people were inside the limo and as many as five of them died, according to multiple reports
Witnesses at the scene reported people were trapped inside the burning limo. The CHP told NBC Bay Area there were multiple fatalities, but could not confirm a number.
Witnesses told NBC Bay Area the limo was not involved in an accident prior to catching on fire. It was not clear what could have sparked the flames.
This is prom season, so there were fears that the group could be high school students on their way to a dance, but the Hayward Daily Review newspaper spoke to a CHP officer who said the victims were not teenagers. but adult women.

After an aircraft fire in the ‘60’s the FAA tried to determine why so many people died in their seats. The fire was slow to spread and everyone should have simply evacuated the plane. Turns out the synthetic materials, foams and plastics, formed cyanide gas when ignited. One whiff paralyzed the passengers and the simply sat there until they died. I’m fairly certain there are stringent fire safety codes for materials in your car or a plane. But a limo, probably not.
High capacity vehicles are built for one purpose -— to kill as many people as possible!

I worked for Fairchild Weston, who had 80% of the crash recorder market. I read all the published reports. The thrust of the report is why did this happen? As I recall, the cyanide part was just further explanation as to why so many people died when you’d think they had plenty of time to evacuate.
My first thoughts also after seeing the pics. Or something similar.
Appears flames possibly from a moon roof.
Could have been drinking alcohol, cigarette or open flame for some reason. The limo lurches, alcohol spills and ignites.
Some years ago my mother was with a party of women at a luncheon. Something similar happened with a mixed drink and burned a woman badly.
I’m guessing electric windows and locks.
I’ve always hated electric windows and door locks.

Nothing to joke about. Maybe these women were out on the town for a bachelorette party? This is very tragic.
We took a limo once to an event in Austin and yes the driver locked us in for our saftey. Seems a little ironic now.
