In fact, modern Mexico is a Third World Hellhole ruled by a corrupt kleptocracy. Its poor, unconnected citizens are forced to flee their country in their millions, not just to find a better life, but to survive. Those left behind are often sustained by income earned abroad. Our de facto open borders policy is a safety valve that keeps the country from imploding. Mexican children are taught to hate the USA in school, but come here in their millions despite this. The country’s socialist rulers conducted a relentless religious persecution that included executions, seizure of church property and restriction of religious activity. But many ordinary Mexicans remained believers. The same socialists took a country that should be rich—oil, peerless agricultural potential, favorable weather two coasts with fishing and tourism and proximity to the world’s largest, most open market—and somehow produced mass poverty. No wonder Obama gushes over it.
