PRINCETON, N.C. (WTVD) -- A Johnston County high school student has been expelled for bringing a gun onto school property, but the school's student body is coming to his defense. David "Cole" Withrow is a senior at Princeton High School. He was set to graduate in just a few weeks, until his arrest Monday for bringing a gun to school. Cole, who is an Eagle Scout and an honors student, said he forgot to take his gun out of his truck after skeet shooting. When he got to school and realized the gun was in his car, he went into school to call his mom so he could leave and take the gun home. The school found out and Cole was arrested and expelled. Now his classmates and members of the community are speaking out in his defense. "He's been taught when you're in trouble, you call your parent, and that's what he did. And now he's being punished for what I consider doing the right thing," family friend Kim Boykin said. "Free Cole" is painted on several cars of Cole's classmates. The "Free Cole" outrage is also going viral on social media. "I do think our faculty did the right thing to protect the students, but I do think it's overdone because he was trying to take it home and do the right thing," Princeton High School student Lacynn Belk said. Still, Johnston County Schools stand by their decision to expel Cole. "A student brought an unloaded shotgun on campus. The shotgun was located in a locked vehicle. Administration reacted promptly and the proper procedures and protocol were followed. The law is very clear when a person knowingly and willingly brings a weapon onto educational property," Johnston County Schools spokesperson Tracey Peedin Jones said.

I lived too close to Philly to see that as a kid, but my friends where I live now tell the same kind of stories. Even where I lived growing up you could bring a knife to school and have it on you all day long. Different values back then. If you dared pull a knife on someone you were labeled a pussy, called a fag and more than likely thrown down a a stairwell.

Just shot himself in the foot, so to speak. The student did not knowingly and willingly bring the gun to school. He forgot it was there (disqualifies knowingly), he tried to remedy once he realized he forgot (disqualifies willingly).

Hey Tracy: The article states he forgot he had the shotgun. Seems to me it would be pretty hard, if not impossible to "knowingly and willingly" bring a weapon to school if he had forgotten about it.
Would it do any good to point out that y'all are making a very embarrassing mountain out of a molehill?
The purpose of the law has *nothing* to do with school safety and *everything* to do with the cultural genocide of the gun culture in the United States.
It is all about teaching young people that guns are *evil* and only *evil* people would be near them.
It is a disgrace that this law was not repealed when the Republicans had the House, the Senate, and the Presidency
You did know that the reason this happens is because there is a Federal law that withdraws federal funds from schools if the states do not enforce this, didn’t you?

And this is the reason ("we don't think") that makes American educators non-professionals and should be paid minimum wage. I really hope I piss off some teachers on here. Your so-called profession doesn't require advanced education. Your frickin' unions take from taxpayers to further indoctrinate teachers to indoctrinate students. Face it, every single subject that needs to be taught all the way through high school can be taught be a high school graduate. The proof is in the millions of home schooled children that do better with parents willing to put in a little effort.

Every time the feds give $X to the states in “optional” block grants, it’s an admission they have overtaxed us (their masters, both morally and intellectually) $X. Otherwise they could mandate what they’re bribing the states for. Therefore, since the feds have admitted overtaxing by that amount, the states should just garnish that amount from federal tax payments originating in that state, and ignore the mandate anyway. They’re being bribed to tyrannize their own citizens with those citizens’ money on issues the feds admit is none of their business. How much clearer does it need to be before they do something?

In March 2011, Princeton School Assistant Principal Catherine Bennett was suspended but never criminally charged after bringing a gun onto campus that was found in the glove box of her vehicle, while being worked on by the school’s auto mechanics class.Bennett had reportedly asked the resource officer to check the car because she had misplaced the weapon and had been searching for it. The officer, Andy Worley, reportedly found the gun but did not take possession of it, instead, he placed it back in the glove box and locked the car doors.
When Bennett and Worley went to retrieve the weapon from the car hours later, the vehicle had been moved inside the auto mechanics class, and the gun was missing.
After questioning several students, the gun was reportedly found hidden underneath the fender of the vehicle. Two students who found the gun allegedly showed the firearm to two other classmates. None of the four students were charged in the 2011 incident.
Officials said at the time the assistant principal would not face charges since she was not aware her missing handgun was in the glove box. Bennett declined to comment on the incident when contacted by WTSB News in 2011.
