[San Francisco] SF's goal of taking its cars off the road hits speed bump

Enforcement of San Francisco’s 2010 law to reduce city government vehicles was supposed to begin two years ago. Now that it has finally started, the requirement is being put to the test.

Nine city department heads have submitted waivers to protect hundreds of trucks, sedans and other vehicles from elimination.

The fleet has long faced criticism for abuse and waste, a fact seen as a blemish on San Francisco’s environmentally conscious image. In recent years, city leaders have launched efforts to reduce vehicle dependency, such as by partnering with car-share programs. In 2010, San Francisco adopted the landmark Healthy Air and Clean Transportation Ordinance — commonly referred to as HACTO — that required an annual 5 percent citywide fleet reduction from July 2011 to July 2015.

Make those pigs use their own cars and pay for their own gas. You will see car usage drop dramatically.

Continue to make it difficult for your citizens to enjoy life. You will eventually find less cars on the road, and less dollars coming in with the taxes.

At 52 cents per mile, you will see nothing at all happen ~ remember, when your employer makes you use your vehicle on the job that's a tax deductible business expense.

What is going on in San Fran is a combination of busy bodies nosing into everything whether they know anything about it or not as well as grand theft!

The solution is to establish a rational management program for gub'mnt owned vehicles ~ which would address two issues ~ not enough of the right kind in the right place, and too many of the wrong kind in the wrong place.

To do that the City Council and top administrators would need to stop toking up and get stone cold sober.

I see none of that happening any time soon.

Frankly, it's a trivial question that half a dozen carrier route supervisors in the local post office could solve in a couple of weeks. I doubt they want to get too close to San Fran city administrators though..........

I guess the gubmint drones don’t like being stripped of their independence any more than the rest of us. I’m gobsmacked.

Even when they drive their own cars and pump their own gas, the gubmint likes to “encourage” them out of their cars by either charging a high premium for parking their own cars, or just eliminating the parking spaces entirely.

I used to work for the state, so I know.

Force them to use public transportation for everything!

Make every government employee use public transport to get to work and any travel at work. Even police and firedept employees unless they are on active road patrol.

Shove their stupid ideas right back up their fat green asses!

Someone should do an environmental study and report that air quality in SF has improved by 90% and they won the war on global warming.

Then announce a giant we won global warming party. Once the people come out and say it isn’t true, Alinky them.
