Cannot accept prisoners' hunger strikes -- too cruel.
"GITMO is something that is not in the best interest of the American people."
Calls upon Congress to act but is also considering "executive options."
Obama, August 2, 2007:
“As President, I will close Guantanamo, reject the Military Commissions Act and adhere to the Geneva Conventions. Our Constitution and our Uniform Code of Military Justice provide a framework for dealing with the terrorists.”
Why doesn’t he just name himself dictator since all he ever does is rule by decree.
Some on the right side of the isle agree with him, like Grover Norquist, Muslim lover.
[snip] In a joint statement prepared by the Constitution Project, David Keene, founder of American Conservative Union, Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, and former representative and presidential candidate Bob Barr say moving suspected terrorists to the Thomson, Illinois prison facility, “makes good sense.” Taxpayers, they note, have already invested $145 million in the facility, which has been “little used.” And the surrounding community, they add, could benefit from increased employment once the prison becomes filled.
“The scaremongering about these issues should stop,” they add, noting that there is “absolutely no reason to fear that prisoners will escape or be released into their communities.”[snip]http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/11/16/conservative-trio-support_n_358928.html
BTW..David Keene is NO conservative, either!
“GITMO is something that is not in the best interest of the *MY* people.”
When truth is out.
“As President, I will close Guantanamo, reject the Military Commissions Act and adhere to the Geneva Conventions. Our Constitution and our Uniform Code of Military Justice provide a framework for dealing with the terrorists”
If Obama adhered to the Geneva Convention, every one of the terrorists at Gitmo would already have been executed.
Meantime, Dr. Shakil Afridi, who provided the info that led to locating Osama bin Laden, is on a hunger strike in a Pakistani prison.
There is no sign that Obama cares.
Dr. Afridi is currently reported to be on a hunger strike in protest at his lack of access to legal counsel, the denial of family visits, and general conditions at the prison in Peshawar. Last month, his family pleaded with President Barack Obama to intercede directly with the Pakistani government to secure his freedom. "
