Connection or coincidence? The FBI and Russian investigators have begun to plumb the potential links between former Gold Gloves boxer-turned-terrorist Tamerlan Tsarnaev and a now-dead Canadian boxer-turned jihadi named William Plotnikov. Plotnikov fought in Dagestan for an Islamist terrorist network and was killed by Russian forces just days before Tamerlan returned to the US. CNN has more on Plotnikov:

Plotnikov came to international scrutiny after an investigative article in Russia's liberal opposition investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta, citing their sources in the security forces, wrote that Plotnikov, known among the rebels as "The Canadian", was one of two local contacts (the other one, a 19-year-old local Dagestani-Palestinian man was killed by the police in May 2012) of the Boston Marathon bombings suspect and fellow Russian emigree boxer Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who has allegedly sought to join the insurgency in Dagestan after returning there from the United States in 2012. According to Novaya, the two communicated via a website associated with the World Assembly of Muslim Youth. Tsarnaev had also previously visited his aunt in Toronto, possibly coming in contact with Plotnikov in person. With both of his alleged contacts to the insurgency dead, Tsarnaev left Russia just two days after Plotnikov was killed.[7][8] It was also noted that the lives of Plotnikov and Tsarnaev were parallel in many aspects.[9]
Vitaly Plotnikov said he was unaware of any connection between his son and Tsarnaev.[10] Dagestan's interior minister Abdurashid Magomedov said through a spokesman that Tsarnaev "did not have contact with the [Islamist] underground during his visit".[11] American investigators in Russia, however, took interest in a possible corelation between the dates of Plotnikov's death and of Tsarnaev's sudden return to the United States.[1][12]

Makes me consider perhaps he was affiliated more with the fighters and may have been afraid he's be next.
You have a terrorist who has lost his contacts (friends) now dead....I suspect fueled his heartfelt and mindset to do Jihad on our nation...
This guy was clearly on a mission and many events along the way encouraged his “mindset” and will to carry these out.
The buck... still...drops in the lap of he and his brother “guilty” of terrorist acts on this nation and it's peoples.
The twists and turns on this case are sure taking some surprising turns.
It amazes me that anyone finds islime attractive. Why a native Russian kid converts and kills his own people is beyond me. I hesitate to call it mental illness because it implies sympathy for their bizarre behavior.
