The owner of the car also left his iPhone behind when he ran away.

From reports I have seen, Boston PD and FBI immediately used this to find location and bearing of vehicle.

Yes, likely. But the ‘telematics’ function not only could provide location, but ‘control’ functions too (i.e., they could have shut down the car so it wouldn’t run).

actually, that’s interesting.

if you took an older phone, with no contract, and hid it in your car wired for power... but no contract... it would receive no calls and cost nothing per month. if your car gets stolen, you can use the phone info (which you would have copied down before hand) to activate and track it

a ready made location service that didn’t cost you anything until you activate it.

interesting.
