Within a century Spain had to carve North America up among the European powers of the time, and probably didn't even have enough men at arms in the homeland to defend itself ~ and by 1700 that was demonstrated.
So, you might ask, what happened to all the Moslems? First, there were some who went to other Moslem countries ~ e.g. Morocco, which had been part of a cultural and economic sphere focused on Spain. You can still find European surnames 'buried' in the morass of Moroccan surnames ~ particularly in Belgium which has been a heavy target of Moroccan re-immigration.
Most simply became Christians, that practice having been common over the previous 700 years ~ populations would adopt the religion of the local ruler, so in some centuries they'd be Moslem and in other centuries Christian. Jews performed functions a tad alien to the overwhelmingly rural environment of Spain so they rarely changed, nor were they asked to change ~ the Moslem and Christian civil laws indicate a definite social preference for keeping Jews tied down manufacturing products and conducting trade.
The Moslem environment was not comparable to the Jewish environment in Medieval Spain, nor even at the conclusion of the Reconquista. They'd had military forces and were intermarried with the most powerful noble Christian families. For the most part they simply disappeared as an identifiable separate religious entity. Later on when the Protestant Reformation seemed poised to penetrate even Spain, they became even better Catholics. End of that story.
Spain proves that moslems can be successfully integrated, but you have to use force to help that along. Then, you need to keep newcomers out. It takes a good century to do the job.
I hope it isn’t just a ploy to placate the Dutch.
My dream is that it would happen here.

The fixation by Euro-liberals on achieving a more perfect society through “diversity” has been an act of cultural suicide in slow motion. Muslims immigrants have no intention of assimilating into a culture that they intend to protect. Once Muslims reach a sufficiently large enough minority, the Ummah-mindset takes hold and they demand that their own society be allowed to carve out exemptions and special considerations. The Muslim hive-mind would seize and destroy every indigenous cultural institution that the host country gives it control of. In short, Islam in a culture of conquest.
Now as to why liberals (er, now “progressives”) insist that society would be better off through “diversity”, please notice who is the target population. It is my theory that this is projection of self-hatred by liberals, and the effect of their policy is to destroy their own culture via dilution and being overwhelmed by cultures the liberal considers to be morally superior.
And it appears by who liberals look up to and applaud that the criteria is basically any culture is worthy except western culture that was founded on Judeo-Christian values, starting with the United States as shaped by the Founding Fathers and what is left of that culture in secular Western Europe.
Multiculturalism is a massive liberal FAIL project. Before it is over, it will be responsible for bloodshed between the indigenous peoples of Europe and the Muslims they invited to live among them.
Who was the genius that thought this was a good idea ?

Forced conversion is an interesting way to define "successfully integrated" but I get your point...
One thought has always provoked me...if the Spanish monarchy was unsuccessful in defeating the Moors, how much would it have changed American history...since the search for gold was the monarchy main objective in Columbus 1492 adventure... to replenish the treasuries after a long drawn out war to reconquer their lands

Spain ultimately replenished its own accounts by discovering silver, not gold. That was the origin of the Spanish milled dollar, or piece of eight ~ it's still in use as a valid 'currency' ~ the US credits it with a value of exactly $1 US dollar ~ for trade. Obviously all those coins are worth much more these days, but the Spanish venture into silver was quite judicious.
The Hapsburgs themselves were always looking for silver in Europe as well as the Americas. The Stid family operated a major silver operation in Bohemia for the Hapsburgs ~ they invented the 'thaler'. The same Stid family pioneered West Central New York, but I don't know if they discovered any silver ~ maybe we just don't know. Stid Hill is all they left behind for the heirs, and it's worthless.
Although we think of the Hapsburgs as having a predominantly German origin, they really didn't. King Filipe I's grandmothers were part and parcel of the ring of nobles based in Brittany and the Loire valley who'd controlled European gold and silver supplies for centuries. As many supposedly Spanish Conquistedores sailed out of St. Malo (in Brittany) as they did out of all Spanish and Italian ports combined.
Failure to eradicate the Moslems as an active entity in Spanish politics would probably have made no difference in the early exploitation of American wealth.
King Filipe might have found resistance to providing the Spanish fleet to the Catholic League for the purpose of sinking the Turkish fleet ~ or maybe not. By that time Moslems in Spain were pretty isolated from that crowd. On the other hand, the Protestant Reformation might have held an attraction for them and that would have made a big difference.

At the very least, we have to halt Mohammedan immigration. We can justify it because of the correlation between terrorism and Mohammedanism. Period. Public safety.
