Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah-3rd District) had serious questions for DHS representatives on Thursday. Fox News reports:
Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz said Thursday that the Department of Homeland Security is using roughly 1,000 rounds of ammunition more per person than the U.S. Army, as he and other lawmakers sharply questioned DHS officials on their massive bullet buys.
It is entirely inexplicable why the Department of Homeland Security needs so much ammunition, Chaffetz, R-Utah, said at a hearing.
The hearing itself was unusual, as questions about the departments ammunition purchases until recently had bubbled largely under the radar on blogs and in the occasional news article. But as the Department of Homeland Security found itself publicly defending the purchases, lawmakers gradually showed more interest in the issue.
Chaffetz questions were about waste and accountability. He was able to structure a solid line of questioning based upon the fact that DHS is requiring 1000 more rounds per agent than the United States Army requires for one of its soldiers:
Chaffetz, who chairs one of the House oversight subcommittees holding the hearing Thursday, revealed that the department currently has more than 260 million rounds in stock. He said the department bought more than 103 million rounds in 2012 and used 116 million that same year among roughly 70,000 agents.
Comparing that with the small-arms purchases procured by the U.S. Army, he said the DHS is churning through between 1,300 and 1,600 rounds per officer, while the U.S. Army goes through roughly 350 rounds per soldier.
He noted that is roughly 1,000 rounds more per person.
Their officers use what seems to be an exorbitant amount of ammunition, he said.

I thought his brother ran over him.
2014 is the most important thing we can focus on.
Stay focused, stay succinct, be polite.
Do not let them rattle you.
Ted Cruz is a model for us all.
I asked that we do that in 2012.
I can’t mount an argument against anything you said.
Keep praying and stay armed and ready.
God help us, please.
7.62x39 is coming down.
I think it can be had for $300 the case vice $600 a couple months ago.
Still, it is over priced. it should be $100 the case.
I am shooting what is cheap, and even then I will be frugal.
Please bring it! I will help buy some ammo for you guys if you guys will point me in right direction and tell me what you need.
LOL, that's right. Okay, I take it back. They didn't kill either terrorist after 200 rounds.

At 300.00, I could go in half.....
200+ rounds in the morning and 200+ rounds in the afternoon. ;-)
I just gotta figure out a way to fit it in the truck. ☺
If you want to feed that beast, it’s yours to shoot.
7.62 X 39 is the diet.. crappy cheap brands preferred.
It’s a Yugo.. it’ll eat crap for weeks and smile about it.
Thank God for Free Republic we have a voice that can be reckoned with, and I guess this must become OUR army to fight these insanities whenever and wherever we can....becoming more activist as a group. We will reach a point where we...and I do include myself..can’t just rant alone over the Internet. Maybe I’m just blowing smoke. I just believe this forum has some clout when need be!
Thank you for giving us this outlet, Jim!
That is what I was told.
I have not clapped eyes on the deal.
Pointless to even fire that thing.. you just reach over into the next county and skewer the bad guys.
I’m amazed they didn’t hurt anybody else. That many round fired by DHS, they could have injured more innocent bystanders than the bombers did in the first place.

Cool! Let me see what I can find and will let you know before the shoot!
I suspect some carpenters and auto body shops will have some windfall business though. There’s certainly going to be a new boat leaving the lot soon. lol
Ok..I will look around. If you have any links to cheap dealers around DFW, please let me know. I could order online if I do it soon. Not sure I could go 300.00, but could do half that for sure.
