Mercedes-Benz Investigating Refrigerant That Caused 'Ball Of Fire' (EPA scorch the earth)

As part of a routine test of a new refrigerant being used in the Mercedes-Benz B Class, engineers simulated a pinhole leak in a coolant line. When the refrigerant (now mixed with A/C compressor oil) sprayed on a hot engine, the results were dramatic.

The vaporized mixture reportedly ignited on contact with the hot surface, creating what Reuters (via Yahoo News) described as a “ball of fire,” followed by a cloud of dangerous hydrogen fluoride gas. The corrosive gas then attacked the windshield, etching the glass and raising even more potential concerns about the safety of the new HFO-1234yf refrigerant.

The team of manufacturers within the SAE International group evaluating the new refrigerant's safety includes Audi, BMW, Chrysler/Fiat, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, PSA, Renault and Toyota.

As I recall you and I had similar opinions on the original refrigerant bans. You might find this interesting.

I recently bought a refrigerator (Not in the US) and the salesman was telling me about the Freon the refrigerator used and I was happy to think that by going to Asia I had gotten away from the imbeciles at the EPA. When it was delivered I discovered it was using R600a. Basically butane. Yes, 10 times the pressure and very flammable. Smart guys these Asians....

Mercury filled bulbs in your house, flammable refrigerants in your car. Don’t ever forget, your government loves and cares about you.

There’s a car A/C coolant that uses a hydrocarbon based liquid, I think it’s either butane or propane. I wouldn’t mind using it as it’s such a small amount and we drive around with literally gallons of another hydrocarbon. I think gasoline would be more dangerous in an accident then the can or to two fill up your system.

I think it;s called Freeze-12.
Since we live in an oven here when it’s summertime, I’ve seen cans listed on Craigslist although I can’t guarantee you won’t get burned or ripped off. At least the R0134a nozzle would be a dead give away.

I don’t know how the law would react if you buy a few cans but if you buy it by the pallet, they might make an example out pf you.

Goldberg’s at Chamblee-Dunwoody and I-285, and BB’s Bagels on McFarland a mile or two west of GA400. So yes, in answer to your question. Goldberg’s is the old-school Jewish deli place, BB’s is the upstart with a bunch of Bronx transplants and probably has the better bagels of the two (though both are very good), and has great diner lunches as well.

Sorry for the threadjack, but it’s your thread, and thought the info worthwhile given your tagline.
