Skip to comments.Tobacco For Eighteen-Year-Olds? What Are Bloomberg’s Priorities?

For the record, I tend to think that a cigarette ban for minors may be appropriate. While I oppose prohibition for adults, I think it makes sense to say that adults shouldnt be permitted to entice children into certain unhealthy choices. Of course, if such a prohibition is put in place, it needs to be justified by banning a substance that is clearly dangerous, not just unhealthy by some statistic that we know doesnt apply to all people. If the evidence qualifies tobacco as such a substance, then I can see restricting it from children.
But recent news about a new proposal from the New York City Counsel is making me wonder what on earth Mayor Bloomberg could have been thinking when he tried to unilaterally force his soda-size ban on people.

Backwards Bloomie Nanny State PING!
I’d like to see a cap on how much money politicians are allowed to have.
IS NANNY BOY ACTUALLY LOSING IT? AS A LIBERTARIAN, I THINK 18 YEAR OLDS SHOULD BE FREE TO SMOKE AND DRINK (THEY CAN DIE FOR THEIR COUNTRY)—I DON’T SMOKE MYSELF—TRIED IT HERE AND THERE—DON’T REALLY CARE FOR IT, DOES NOTHING TO ME. BUT BLOOMIE BOY HAS REALLY FLIPPED—WHAT IS HE TRYING TO BECOME A LIBERTARIAN?
Reminds me of a line in the Tim Wilson comedy song........”You can go to war when your 18......but you can’t buy a beer...”
One word too many.
Citizens 18 years of age aren’t mature enough to make an informed judgement call on the purchase of a legal producat but they are mature enough to make an informed judgement call in the voting booth.
Can’t have it both ways, Nanny.
Yes, this group of people is mature enough and wise enough to get to decide who **I** have to call “President”, but not do decide what to put in their own lungs. [eyeroll]
Wait! Rereading my last post, I think I may have a case for injunctive relief from second-hand Obama!
Kids you can have all the “plan B” you want.
Just don’t wash it down with a big soda or have a cig after sex.
What would the prosecution for minors who use “legalized pot” be then? Or would the drug warriors claim “it can’t be stopped”, therefore no prosecution? Just go after alcohol and tobacco, same as ever in their world.
Yet 12 year olds are mature enough to engage in sex, get pregnant, and buy their own morning after pills without consultation or supervision. Right.
But Obama says they are children and stay on mom and dad's medical plan until they are 26.
Heck - They got ghetto grandmothers younger than that.
Thanks for the ping!
Smoking cigarettes is the least of our problem with kids. This is not the 1950s.
Now they just play video games all day and abuse prescription painkillers.
