A call for St Georges Day to be declared a national holiday has been made by UKIP.
It is just crazy that Scotland and Ireland have national holidays for their patron saints and a huge thing is made each year for St David in Wales but poor St George hardly gets a look in, said the party's deputy leader, Paul Nuttall MEP.
It is long overdue that a national holiday should be given for England. We have so much to celebrate in this country and UKIP believes that April 23 should be properly marked.
I love to see the few patriotic souls who proudly wear a red rose each St Georges Day and this is a tradition which we want to encourage.
I appreciate we are in the middle of a recession but a red rose costs far less than even a pint of beer and shows the world that we are proud to be English.
Weird. I was just reading about a British music critic who has been calling for this. He considers himself English, not British. Anyways, I think St. George would not be popular in that sceptred isle today.
I believe it is also William Shakepeare’s birthday.
While it’s not a holiday, it is observed by native-born English people so it does not really go unobserved, just at work rather than at home (if a week-day).
Brighton's 'peaceful' March for England sees 20 arrests
March for England, which describes itself as an English pressure group, has held an event in Brighton to mark St George's Day for the past six years. Missiles were thrown at marchers, bricks were thrown at police horses and officers were attacked with stones and ink
Eric Pickles wants England to reclaim historic county names
In a symbolic gesture to celebrate St Georges Day, Mr Pickles pledged to formally recognise county names such as Cumberland, Huntingdonshire and Westmorland - which were administratively abolished by Edward Heath's government in 1972. Mr Pickles instructions could see councils across the country erecting signs bearing the historic names on them.
ROCKER Liam Gallagher got so plastered at a posh boozer that he tried to ride a DOG then left without settling his £300 bar tab.
A good thing to honor England’s saint! Fly the Red Cross banner and wear the red rose! There will always be an England!
There’s more appreciation for this legendary saint in Georgia than modern day England. It’s a nice idea, but the government can hardly fit another holiday onto the calender, what with “LGBTQRXZ Awareness Day” and “Hug A Hijab Day” and “Pedophilia Sensitivity Day” in the works. I mean, who has to time to celebrate heritage with all the persecuted minorities who we need to make feel special?
I think a Richard III day would be appropriate as well. Everyone could go around affecting a limp while uttering ala Sir Larry "a horse...a horse...etc. Kind of like talk-like-a-pirate day.
Your Muzzies ain’t a-gonna like it.
Thanks! I got my red rose on!
It would be singularly appropriate for Shakespeare, our greatest playwright and poet, to be born on the patron saint's day, in a town that is pretty much the geograhic centre of the country.
Fortunately, the good St George got around a lot. He is revered by a great many people, including curiously, muslims.
